Wife Gladys took over until 1955. In the 1920's and 1930's he had his own band. He played the banjo and other instruments. (Gladys) My Dad was a serious man with a Quick smile and a big heart for family. He made Christmas for all of us with many gifts. On Christmas night we shared many more gifts with my cousins Barabara, Jean, and Sam Jr . and our Dugan Grandparents which made a family of us all because we had so much to share together. One Christmas I woke up and there was a ribbon that lead down to the cellar where there were two sets of trains on two tables 8'x8' and boy did I enjoy them and for many years after but that day I had to be dragged upstairs to open more presents. This you must understand all occurred during the Depression Of the 1930's. I went to NY with him to watch Babe Ruth who played for the Yankees when I was about 7 yrs. old and he told me that he played for the Yankee AAA team when he was young and I sure was proud of that and I sure enjoyed the Hot dogs that he stuffed into me, gladly I might add. Dad owned a cabin cruiser boat that he would take family and friends out fishing and I remember on one trip that my sister Eileen was fishing on one side and I fished on the other side and you can guess who caught most of the fish. I never saw a girl catch so many flat fish two at a time and fill the Bushell basket up almost by herself. Dad took me fishing on Lake Zoor and we dug worms in the flower garden and this time NO Eileen so I felt that this was my turn but the perch were small and ate my bait and no fish but Dad said wait the big ones come before dark and sure enough wham and I had a large bullhead fish that I though was ugly until I gave it to my Mother and she said it was her favorite fish so my buttons on my shirt were popping, after all I caught the big one. Dad worked long hours driving the trucks and came home late and sometimes we only saw him on Sundays because we all went to bed early on weekdays and we were out playing ball or swimming at the beach in the summer. He taught me the art of growing roses and using fertilizer which in those days was a trip to a local farm to bring home Bushels Els of cow dung. Boy that stuff sure was strong when you mixed it into the soil with your hands but it sure made the roses bloom and the lesson was remembered for years after because I still use it in my garden today. My Dad in his last years, was part of the team that built the 9 room house at 145 Harrison Ave.. He cut Most of the wood that went into the two story house he built for all of us with the help of 4 of the drivers and helpers that worked for him. All that effort was to bring the family all under one roof again as Eileen and Rowie were living with the Dugan grandparents for about 3 yrs. due to tight living quarters in the small house we lived in on Cedar Street . Dad only lived 1 1/2 yrs. when it was finished. This hard working Irishman who enjoyed life his way as a big hearted man and father to five children who all loved and respected him and where proud of his accomplishments and appreciated the sacrifices that he made for his family. We all missed him dearly and have never forgotten him and the love we all shared as a family. ---- Earl Jr. OBITUARY Bridgeport Post Milford; Oct. 30, 1941, -- Earl W.
