Local indian tribe Abenaki. History Highgate area 1800+ Indian tribe in area was called "St Francis" , few settlers, Highgate was a Indian hunting ground where they would herd deer and bears into Little Pond where they then slaughtered them to provide food for the winter. Potatoes later on were the chosen crop to supply to the many mills that made starch. Many rivers and streams in the area supplied the water needed for the mills in St. Albans. Abenaki indians were local to this area. Highgate, VT 1997 Highgate is a country style home town with small but efficient services to meet the community needs. There is a city hall staffed by two clerks who go out of their way to help answer your questions and show one how to look up their files of families. The old town hall is now a library in the center area. The area has a country store for supplies and there are two churches in the area and the ME Church is where some of the Rivers Married including George and Mary. The country side is mostly farms with homes from the 1930's and earlier with ranch styles mixed in. A drive through the area is relaxing to look at the rolling hills and cows grazing on the farms. Trees abound in the area and are leftovers from the time that the grants were given out and they cleared some of the land and the rest of the trees were left particularly the birch which were later used for a sailing ship's main mast used on many English ships. The center area of Highgate extends 3 mile in either direction and serves Highgate Springs also. Highgate Springs, VT Family History passed on verbally indicates that this is the very small section outside of Highgate is the place that Rivers family lived. Matilda related that they would walk 3 miles to the Canadian border. ( Philipsburg is only about 2 miles farther) This area is a one store and gas station with a post office. The rest is mostly farms with cows and crop lands. In the center there is small church that could hold maybe 50 people that is from the 1880 period or earlier. All Records are maintained in Highgate Ctr. ---- Visited in 1997 -- Earl Dugan Sheldon, VT Lena and Mary Ellen Rivers Married and lived here for a time. Sheldon is a very isolated and is a country side of rolling hills and farms with most raising cows on the land. The town hall is small and a one woman office with good records of vital statistics of all the town peoples. As you drive into the area you see homes that are modern ranches mixed in with the 1930 and older homes all living close to the road for easy access to the highway. The farms dominate the area that has brooks and streams. There are stands of trees at the back of the farms that may have been left that way by the earlier settlers whose land grants required them to clear so many acres and leave the balance of the land grant untouched. It is very relaxing to drive through the country side and view the area. --- Earl Dugan 1997 History Holyoke 1900 period - Population stood at 45812 in 1900;1910 57000 in1908 housing was 3rd worst in the nation with 11 persons per dwelling. 1900 3600 children of native USA parentige and 19000 foreign born. Holyoke was considered one of the most law biding cities in the state. Holyoke was the worlds largest paper producers. Western Mass. was the automotive center of the country. A steam car was built in Chicopee falls. The cars were built so that passengers were nearly 6 ft off the ground and it had a two cylinder powered engin that was water cooled. The Transcript news paper was reporting a marriage were the bride said she was 35 and the groom said he was 25 and he didn't want that fact published.Workers forced to live in Chicopee were now taking advantage of the trolley to shop in Springfield that was hurting Holyoke stores. In 1903 the Chicopee bridge caught fire at one end of the bridge and the wind fanned the flames and the firefighters had to back up fast as the bridge burned down. Then a ferry was used for two years, while the bridge was rebuilt. In Nov. to April you could walk across the river as the ferry could not be used. Many of the old factories are still in use in 1996 and many puplic buildings in use today are from that time period. The homes that abound in the area are a mix of yesterday and today which gives you a movement of time.
