Note: Ruben Patrick Conklin, traveled with his parents from Jackson Co. IA. to a farm near Gayville, S.D. in 1887. Rueben worked for his brother, Peter Conklin on a farm North of Gayville. Peter Conklin came to Gayville in 1884. In 1906. SD,IA,SD, Earl Conklin, son, wm, age 13, b.c. 1917, s, b. SD,IA,SD, Funeral services were held Saturday, 28 Feb, at 2:00 p.m. with Rt. Rev. Msgr. Leo Feuerback officiating, for Ruben P. Conklin, who passed away at his home in Sturgis Wednesday, 25 Feb. following a lingering illness, Mrs. Omer Larson, pianist accompanied Mrs. Ramona Patterson, soloist. Mr. Conklin was born 15 Oct 1870, Maquoketa, IA, the seventh child in a family of thirteen, nine of which preceded him death. He moved to Nebraska as a youth and in 1888 moved to Yankton in Dakota Territory. In 1906, he homesteaded near Scenic, SD on Hort Table. He was married to Serena Molloy in 1912. Four children were born to this union, all survive him, He moved to Rapid Valley and in 1921 and for the next few years operated what was hen known as the "Woods Ranch". In 1926, he moved to Rosedale ranch near Keystone and resided there until he moved to Sturgis in 1956. Mr. Conklin was employed by the State Highway Dept. for a number of years, retiring in 1955. He is survived by his wife, two daus., Mrs. Robert M. Howe, and Mrs. C.D. Green of Sturgis; two sons, Earl, Rapid City and Elmer, Grand Forks, ND, three sisters, Mrs. Eda McElwain and Mrs. Ernest Miller, Emmet, ND, and Mrs. Cary Colby, Berkeley, CA, 18 grandchildren, 6 great grandchildren, and a number of nieces and nephews also survive. Interment was in the St. Aloysius Cem.of Sturgis under the direction of the F.O. Jolley Funeral Home with Robie Howe, Danny Howe, Donnie Green, Rob't Skinner, Bud Skinner and Delmar Green as casket bearers.
