He was a welder. The LST's were sailed down the Mississippi River to the Gulf of Mexico, then to various ports. The Navy dredged the Mississippi River to make this possible. That is how my Dad met his future father-in-law. Dad was on one of this "shakedown cruises" down the Mississippi.
