Notes
a. Note:   There has always been speculation as to why children received the names they have. In the case of Thomas McCall Tigner, this seems to be a factual reason: There was a Thomas McCall born in 1762 in York County, PA and died 1851 in West Middletown, PA , the birthplace of Thomas McCall Tigner. Mr. McCall had several brothers and sisters, however, he and his wife Mary Stewart had no children of their own. They helped raise other childdren, including neices and nephews on both sides. He filled important offices in the church and in the state. He was involved with the temperance movement and the anti-slavery movement. Thomas McCall was a kind philanthropist, an humble and devoted follower of Jesus Christ. Having possessed a valuable estate, he bequeathed to the church and missions, besides leaving $15,000 and his land to his wife, to all his brothers and their children sizable amounts. To those boys who were named after him, even though they were not related, he also left money. One of these was Thomas McCall Tigner, who was left $100 for his education.
The same practice took place for other boys who were named after Archibald Campbell and his brother Alexander Campbell. They were both involved with the founding of the Disciples of Christ Church and Bethany College. The Tigners named two of their sons after these two men.
