Shirley] John served in advisory capacity for Freedom Baptist Church in Garrard Co, Ky, This is a country church (still used for worship as of 1970's [source: Johnston Stapp and Allied Families" compiled by Jennie F. Downing Crow, North Platte, Nebr, 1979.] located in an area of rolling hills, trees and streams. There is a cemetary but many stones cannot be read. According to the inventory of John's estate, he was a financial success. There are books, considerable furniture, household equipment, sevel hogs, one yoke of oxen, and three negro men and one negro woman. Buyers at the estate sale were mostly ralatives, including daughter, Elizabeth (Brooks) Odor, who soon moved to Illinious. John Brooks' will names each of his children and the children of his deceased son, William. It also gives an equal share to Susan Smith, "My sister interwed ... as She has lived with me almost ever since my intermarriage with her sister." [source: Court records in Garrard Co, KY.
