They list one add'tl.son: Henry J. WHEELER md. 21 Dec 1806 Jane FOSTER in Adair Co., KY(however, others do not list this Henry J.). Comments: (Miss Joida WHITTEN, 5314 Emerson, Dallas, TX 75209): "Archelaus WHEELER is known to have lived in Buckingham and BedfordCounties, Virginia; in Madison Co., Kentucky and in the portion of Green County which laterbecame Adair County, Kentucky. "Because of the many variations in spelling of the name "Archelaus:,we find Archelaus WHEELER sometimes as Archer, Archibald, Archless,Achilles, and even Eschelus WHEELER. Although the many variations on hisname sometimes makes research more complicated, there is the advantage ofknowing that apparently there was only one man named Archelaus WHEELER inVirginia during the 1700s. "The earliest record we have concerning Archelaus WHEELER is hislisting in the 1774 Tithables of Buckingham Co., Virginia, where heappeared as "Archer WHELER", having one tithable, himself. (BuckinghamCo., VA Tithables, 1774, p. 1, List of George Hooper) "The only other reference to Archelaus WHEELER that we have found inBuckingham Co. is one located in Prince Edward Co., Virginia, DistrictCourt Deeds, 1789-1816, pages 65-66, Mortgage deed dated 19 Jan 1795between David COUPLAND, Buckingham Co. to James, Thomas and FrancisDEANE, Cumberland Co. for 130 acres in Buckingham, together with a watergrist mill thereon, "the said Land being the Tract formerly purchased bythe said David COUPLAND of a certain Archelaus WHEELER and is bounded bythe lines and lands of the Belmont Tract, Thomas RANDOLPH, IshamRANDOLPH, Charles WHEELER and Anderson ADCOCK." The COUPLAND deed wasrecorded in Buckingham 8 Jun 1795, and in District Court at Prince Edward1 Sep 1795. The tract had to have been purchased by David COUPLND ofArchelaus WHEELER before 1782 for the name Archelaus WHEELER does notappear in the Personal Property Tax Lists or in the Land Tax Records of Buckingham from 1782on. David COUPLAND's home tract was "Springfield" which lay across theBuckingham-Cumberland line, about where Buffalo Creek empties into WillisCreek (Willis River). Whether or not the above 130 acre tract wasadjacent to "Springfield", or whether or not the grist mill referred towas erected by Archelaus WHEELER or by David COUPLAND is not known to usat this time. "Archelaus WHEELER was in Bedford Co., VA by 21 Nov 1781 for hissignature appears on a Legislative Petition of that date from Bedfordresidents, which petition is on file in the Virginia State Library,Archives Division. This same petition also carries the names of RolenWHELLER, Thos. WHEELER, and Benjamin WHEELER, all the WHEELER namesappearing on the same page. "Although we have found no deed recorded in the name of ArchelausWHEELER in Bedford Co., VA, we do find him listed from 1782 through 1791in the Personal Property Tax Lists of that county, in the SouthernDistrict as are the other WHEELERs of Bedford. In all but two of thoseyears he was the only one listed as a tithable in his household. In 1782and in 1787, however, he had with him one other tithable, a white male of16 and under 21. Since none of his known sons would fit this age group,we do not know who the young tithable was in either 1782 or 1787. "In February 1787 Court, Archelaus WHEELER qualified as Constable inroom of Joshua MAY. In March 1787 Court, he qualified as Deputy Sheriffwith the approbation of Wm. LEFTWICH, Gent., Sheriff, to collect the oldarrears of Henry WARD, late Deputy Sheriff. (Bedford Co., VA. Order Book9, pages 36 and 33) "On 29 Aug 1787, both Benjamin WHEELER and Archelaus WHEELER servedon the jury for COFFE vs. STEEL, 31 Aug 1787, Archelaus WHEELER wasallowed 8 days attendance in the suit, HENGLE vs. MARTIN, and on the sameday, Benjamin and Archelaus WHEELER were both noted as being jurors onCALLAWY vs. D. SHERMAN. It should be noted that Roland WHEELER was alsopresent and serving on juries during these same court days in Aug 1787.On 30 Nov 1787 the Court ordered that Dan, James, John WRIGHT, ArchelausWHEELER and Roland WHEELER (or any 3 of them) were to view a way to turnthe road around Thomas PATE's plantation and make a report. (BedfordCo., VA Order Book 9, pages 93, 96, 97, 131) "In the same Order Book, page 183, there is a notation concerning asuit, CALLAWAY and Co. vs. Archelaus WHEELER, which pertains to a courtpacket found among the loose papers in Bedford. On 26 May 1788 ArchelausWHEELER (Archelius (X) WHEELOR) signed a note promising to pay JamesCALLAWAY and Co. L11.19 shillings and 3 pence, with a penal sum of L23 18shillings 6 pence. It was witnessed by Tho. CRUMP and Jacob WAD(WADE?). On 7 Jun 1788, the Sheriff was ordered to "take ArchelausWHEELER and him safely keep...(to appear) fourth Monday August next toanswer James CALLAWAY and Co. of a plea of debt for L23 18 shillings and6 pence damages L2. The order was noted as having been executed, andBenjamin WHEELER was noted as making bail for Archelaus. The Order Bookreference notes a judgment of L11. 19.3 with interest from June Court1788, but also notes a stay of execution of the judgment until Christmas. "Bedford Co. VA Order Book 10 carries at least four entries forArchelaus WHEELER. On pages 75, 76, and 78, 30 Mar 1791, it is notedthat Archelaus WHEELER served on the juries for CALLAWAY, late Sheriff,vs. OTEY, DICKERSON vs. PHELPS, and also IRION vs. MARKHAM. Although itwas approximately this time (1791) that Archelaus WHEELER moved toMadison Co., KY, there is one last Order Book 10 item concerning him onpage 362, 24 Mar 1795 is noted, "Commonwealth vs. Archelaus WHEELER,abated by Sheriff's return". "The only other mention of Archelaus WHEELER in Bedford Co., VA thatwe have found thus far is as a witness to the deed of 13 Jun 1789, JamesPAYNE of Bedford Co., to James WHEELER, of Bedford Co., 30 acres onbrances of Beaver Dam Creek, adjacent DOLLARD's. The other witnesseswere William NIMMO, John DOLLARD and Robert NIMMO. The deed was recorded28 Feb 1791. "According to Judge Forrest Calico on page 209 of his "History ofGarrard County, Kentucky and Its Churches", "Archibald" WHEELER wasliving on Paint Lick Creek before 1800, Paint Lick forming the linebetween Madison and Garrard Counties, Kentucky. "The 1792 Madison County, Kentucky Tax Lists show Eschelus WHEELER,with 1 white male above 21, 2 horses and 3 cattle. No acreage is listedfor him. He was on the list of John ADAMS. (Kentucky Historical SocietyRegister, Vol. 23, p124). "1 Jan 1795, Nancy, daughter of Archelaus WHEELER, married BenjaminDABNEY in Madison Co., KY. They were married by John MANIRE. (MadisonCo., KY Marriage Records, Vol. 1, page 22) "A list of tax delinquents was returned in 1796 by the Sheriff ofMadison Co., KY and reported on that list, along with a number of otherswho had removed to the same point, was Archelaus WHEELER, "Removed toGreen County". (The Kentucky Researcher, Vol. 3, March 1965, p5.) "The Second Census of Kentucky 1800, lists Archless WHEELER in GreenCounty. In 1801, Adair Co. was formed from Green, and from that pointuntil his death in 1830, Archelaus WHEELER is found in records of AdairCo. The Adair Co. Tax Books from 1802 show Archelaus WHEELER as being onRussell's Creek, on a land entry made by himself. Through many years hewas shown as having 182 acres; however, in 1812 he was shown with 150,while his son, Benjamin WHEELER was on 32 acres on Russell's Creek, apparently a portion of his father's original land. In 1802, ArchelausWHEELER, Jr. was already above 21 and on the Adair Co. Tax Lists. In1804 John WHEELER's name appeared for the first time. In 1807 AllenWHEELER's name began appearing, in 1808, Charles WHEELER began being listed, in 1810 Benjamin WHEELER first appeared by name and in 1815, thename of Samuel WHEELER was first listed. I have not pursued the AdairTax Lists beyond 1815, but the tax records covered indicate that theforegoing WHEELER's were sons of Archelaus WHEELER. Although these weretheir first appearances on the tax lists, all were not listed in Adaircontinuously thereafter. Some have been located at various times in theWayne Co., KY records, and it is probable that WHEELERs would be found inRussell Co., KY as well. "Adair Co., KY Deed Book I, page 29 carries a deed from ArchelausWHEELER, (Jr.) of Adair Co. tohis brother William WHEELER of Adair, wherein he sold for $50 his interest in "One hundred and fifty Acres onwhich my father Archelus WHEELER lived for many years previous to, and athis death and which tract of land is devised by my said father in hislast will and testament to the said William WHEELER, Samuel WHEELER andAllen WHEELER...after the death of my mother...." The deed is dated 25Feb 1835, with no witnesses, and signed, "Archelus (X) WHEELER. It wasrecorded on the same day. "The will of Archelaus WHEELER was notdated, but was proven 3 Jan1831. Archelaus appeared on the 1830 Adair Co., KY Census as one abovethe age of 80 and under the age of 90, thus we can assume he died afterthe census, and prior to January 1831. The will stipulates that as muchof his personal estate as required be sold to pay his debts and funeralexpenses. Archelaus WHEELER gave to his wife, Mildred, all of his estateof every kind for her lifetime. After her death, the land was to be soldand the money from the sale was to be divided with one half to his sonWilliam WHEELER, and the other half to be divided bhetween his sons,Archelaus, Allen and Samuel WHEELER. Archelaus also stipulated thatafter his debts, etc. were paid, the remainder of his personal estate wasto be sold and the money from the sale was to be divided between his daughters Nancy DABNEY,Mildred WADE and Polly GRIMES, "the balance of my children havingreceived from me a full portion heretofore". If his three daughtersNancy, Mildred and Polly chose to do so, they had the option of dividingthe personal property itself. The Executors of the will were to be hiswife, Mildred WHEELER, and his son William WHEELER. The will was signed,"Archilles (X) WHEELER", and was witnessed by John BUTLER, David SHIELDS,and John SMITH (Sct.). Proving witnesses on 3 Jan 1831 were DavidSHIELDS and John BUTLER. Mildred and William WHEELER were appointedExecutors, and Securities on their bond of $240 were Samuel WHEELER and Jacob BURK. The will was recorded in Adair Co., Kentucky Will Book C, page545. "From the text of the will, it is evident that Archelaus WHEELER hadchildren other than the ones named in the will itself. It is probablethat John, Benjamin and Charles WHEELER were three of those children. Itis possible that another was one Henry J. (or Henry I.) WHEELER. Therecould have been one or two others as well. "There were several WHEELERs in or near Adair Co. who may figure inthe history of Archelaus WHEELER, including a Joseph WHEELER who took upland on the Cumberland River, at least part of which was later in thepossession of Nathaniel SHREWSBURY, Sr., according to the 1802 Adair TaxBooks. (This was the same Nathaniel SHREWSBURY who served as Baptistminister in Bedford Co., Virginia, and who later settled and died in whatis now Wayne Co., KY. Two of his children, Allen SHREWSBURY and SallySHREWSBURY, married two of the children of Benjamin WHEELER who was soclosely associated with Archelaus WHEELER in Buckingham and Bedford Cos.,VA as well as in Kentucky.) Joseph WHEELER appeared in the 1810 Wayne Co., KY census withhis family. He was born sometime between 1766 and 1784. "Of somewhat younger WHEELERs of Adair Co., there was one who shouldbe noted, for the town of Ben WHEELER, Texas was named for him. He wasBenjamin F. WHEELER, born in Adair Co., KY who came to Texas about 1847when he was supposedly about 30. He settled in Van Zandt Co., Texas andcarried mail by horseback across country until at least 1876. As of thisdate, we do not know the parents of this Benjamin F. WHEELER. "Although we know the names and something about a number of thegrandchildren of Archelaus and Mildred WHEELER, and have a tentative listof others, there are too many gaps in our information to set it downhere. Perhaps others will supply that data and add to what has beennoted here concerning the history of Archelaus and Mildred WHEELER. The assigneesof the VAN CLEAVES, whose settlings and improvements and holdingsaffected some twenty-seven hundred acres of land, are as follows:William WHEELER, etc. All these were living on the land and hadpossessed it by right of purchase and settlement from about the years of1784 to 87.
