Note: e 176 OVI at age 14. (1863) The official roster of troops show a William M. West, age 18, joined the 176th OVI on Sept. 19, 1864 and mustered out on June 14, 1865 in Nashville, Tenn. We understand that he misinformed about his age when enlisting. The 176th may have been combined with the 129th. The license for his marriage to Ellen Blackwell dated Feb. 17, 1885 lists his age as 25. If he was born in 1849, he would have been 35 or 36 years of age. We believe his year of birth to be 1849. We find William appearing in Iowa in 1870 Federal Census(Delaware County, Adams Twp.) page 10, with Elizabeth (Billings)West who he married on July 17, 1870. She died in 1883. We have a copy of their marriage certificate. They were married by J.A. Abott at the residence of Mrs. Robinson Information provided at time of death suggests that he was born in Marietta, Ohio which is in Washington County. Belmont/Washington County were split up which may account for the different sources of place of birth. He nor his parents appear in the 1850 Census for these counties nor Monroe county. A review of all WEST's in Ohio in 1850 did not reveal their presence. Enlistment record indicates he joined from Aurelius Twp, Washington County, Ohio A copy of the 1860 census has been requested on Feb 3, 2000 Adams county clerk, vital statistics is 217-277-2150. address po box 1169, Quincy, Ill 62306
