a. Note:   His cemetery stone stated name as "Christopher J. Neese" & dates as "1817 - 1908". His marriage bond & census records stated name as "Christian J. Neese". Census records stated ages as 37 in 1860, 60 in 1880, 80 & born Jun 1820 in 1900. Statements: (1) he could not have been born in 1817 since his mother would have been age 10, (2) he could not have been born in 1820 since she would have been 13, (3) he could possibly have been born in 1823 since she would have been age 16 & could have had a child at that age. Lorena GARRETT SHOFFNER stated his date of birth as 1827 & quoted Bryce Neese Papers. He was called "Chris" and the person who had the cemetery stone made might have assumed that "Chris" was short for "Christopher." His marriage bond and census records all listed his name as "Christian." He found gold on his property at one time. It wasn't much. He also taught some of the free slaves in the area to read & write.
