Notes
a. Note:   He was named for paternal grandfather, William Washington Woodward BINNING. He loved to tell people that he was born in NY but moved south when he was 3 years old & brought his family with him. After his family left NY they lived in High Point & Greensboro (Guilford Co.) NC, Bennettsville SC, Smithfield NC, Morehead City (Carteret Co.) NC where he met his future wife, & Lexington (Davidson Co.) NC. He graduated from Lexington High School 05/30/1934 (source, diploma). After he finished high school he went to work for Erlanger Mills where his first job was that of sweeping floors. He went from there to A&P Food Stores as a clerk & then assistant manager. He left there in 1938 to go with Lexington Wholesale Grocery Co. as shipping clerk & advanced to salesman & assistant manager. In 1939 he went back to Morehead City to bring Marguerite Early WAY home as his wife. He served in the U.S. Navy from 02/21/1945 to 03/14/1946 & his service number was 970-76-70. He was discharged at Norfolk VA (discharge # 2486354), after being stationed at Bainbridge MD (US Naval Training Center), Norfolk VA, Sampson NY, & Great Lakes in Chicago IL. Ranks held were Seaman 1st & Storekeeper 1st. In 1953 he decided to go into business for himself opening the Clean-Rite Venetian Blind Co. on N. Main St. in Lexington (NC). In 1955 he moved from there to E. 1st Ave. because of increased business, changing the name of the company to Binning's. There he began selling pre-assembled awnings, carports, screens, storm windows & storm doors. In 1957, with 10 employees counting his wife, they started buying KD parts for storm windows & assembling them. In 1958 the corporation known as Binning's Inc. was formed with three stockholders, including himself. By 1958 they had outgrown the headquarters on E. 1st Ave. so it became necessary to build a new building on Tolbert Blvd. In this building, which contained 7,500 sq. ft., the manufacture of storm windows & doors from "scratch" was begun. Two additions were necessary to this building, one in 1960 & one in 1961. By this time the Company was again experiencing growing pains with a new building on Mize Rd. becoming necessary in 1962. This building housed 24,000 sq. ft. of plant space & 1,500 sq. ft. of office space. Additions were added in 1964, 1966, 1967, 1969, & 1971. Well over half of the stock was locally owned, & in the fiscal year ending 04/27/1973 Binning's Inc. sales were $8.6 million. In 1973 it was 144,000 sq. ft. located on a 24-acre tract of land, & was the largest manufacturer of aluminum building products of its type in the Southeast. In 1974, Binning's Inc. merged with National Gypsum Co. (head quartered in Buffalo, NY) & became Binning's Building Products. In 1976 they had some $12 million in sales & employed about 300 people. He retired 04/29/1977. Bill's hobby was golf with a handicap of 11. He got a pilot's license and enjoyed flying his company's small plane for about 3 1/2 years until he had to give it up due to "doctor's orders" because of his high blood pressure. Some of his civic positions were (a) Chamber of Commerce (Director in 1964 & President in 1966), (b) YMCA sponsored Carolinas Conference Basketball tournament (Ticket Chairman 1963, General Chairman 1964-1965, as well as working on other committees at various times), (c) Board of Directors, Lexington State Bank (01/09/1973 - 12/31/1986), (d) Board of Directors, Kiwanis Club, (e) Chamber of Commerce (Board of Directors 1964-1965, President 1966), (f) charter member of Jaycees, (g) United Fund Drive (for several years, including chairman in 1976), (h) Salvation Army (fund-raising committee & chairman of the advance division in 1971) , (i) Board of Stewards at First United Methodist Church, (j) Board of Directors for the Dutch Club, (k) Board of Directors, YMCA. Physical description: 5' 9 1/2" tall, blue eyes. After his wife's death & cremation, her ashes were saved until after his death and their ashes were scattered at sea, N. Myrtle Beach SC, 11/27/1993, by their daughters and their families. His address at death was 116 Magnolia Drive, Lexington, NC.
