Notes
a. Note:   From an interview with his brother Burl Knapp, done by Gail Knapp in 1980, comes this information:
Art flew the Atlantic Ocean alone and established a record. He flew to the east coast and then Nova Scotia, and then across the ocean and broke a record. He used to hide his books on the way down to the school house, so he wouldn't have his lessons. He never finished the eighth grade but he was a natural mathematician. After he left home he went to Charlotte, Michigan, where he met and married his wife Ethel. He worked in automobile factories and then finally he entered in to a partnership with another man and ran a factory on East Michigan street in Jackson, Michigan. They were doing automotive parts and were doing real well until the recession came and he lost his share in the factory. He started a new business in a little barn in back of a house and he gradually picked up and got on his feet again and was very successful. He had a beautiful factory out in a wooded section of Jackson.
