Notes
a. Note:   In later life Albert Delos liked to be called "A.D" ; He was known as "Loss" or "Delos" to many in his family. A.D. and Mary Malcolm moved from Ohio to Edmore, Home Twp., Michigan in1881. A.D. had heard that there were jobs to be had because of the lumbering and saw mills up there. One of their experiences at their new home was when a bear tried to get on their house. The story was often told by their son Charles H. Knapp. Here is the text of that story.
A BEAR ON THE ROOF Back in 1881 my mom and dad were living up in Edmore. My Dad used to hunt deer, you know, kill a deer once in a while-or a partridge or rabbit. Anyway he had killed this deer and dressed it out and between this old shed and this kinda "lean-to" they had added to the house for a bedroom he had a pole. And that's where they hung the "lights" -- deer lights is what they called them. That's the liver, and heart, and lungs all together, see. Well, he hung 'em out there and later on he heard something out there at night and ,by gosh, he went out and he could see a shadow movin' around by that pole out there. It was tryin' to get across the pole. Well, he couldn't exactly see what it was so he came back into the house, but it was a bear and it had gotten hold of those lights and then climbed across the pole to the roof of that lean-to on the place where they lived. Now the boards on that roof weren't very strong and they were giving way a little bit, and by now my dad knew it was a bear, so he told my mother to stand up on the bed and push up on on the boards to hold them up 'cause the bear was startin' to fall through. So she did that and he grabbed his gun and ran out there to shoot it (and the old dog was a'barkin too, you know. But the bear wasn't paying attention to 'im.) And my dad got the lantern and his gun and got out there and before he could shoot the bear why...that bear had took off with those lights and stuff and run off into the woods. And the old dog right after him barkin' and carrying on. That dog never did come back. Bear must've killed the dog. (Charles H. Knapp, December 6, 1982) By 1885 A.D. and his family were living in McBrides, Michigan, but before 1900 they had moved to Beaverton Twp., Gladwin Co., Michigan where A.D. built a cabin for them to live in on 80 acres of farmland located on North Gladwin Road. In addition to farming A.D. did some carpentry work and trained hunting dogs, including some that were sent to Europe and also Peking China. He also guided hunting parties in the north Michigan area. He was considered a great sportsman. Other ways he found to earn money was selling bear oil, raising honey bees, and running a sorgham mill. A.D. enjoyed writing poetry, some of which was published, and was well known around the area for his storytelling abilities. Towards the end of his life he became quite ill and consequently moved to his daughter Della Caswells home in Coleman, Midland Co., Michigan. He was cared for there until his passing on 15 March 1941. He was buried in the Warren (Coleman) Cemetery. (Birth and death date information for A.D. Knapp from his obituary, his funeral card, and his son Charles H. Knapp,)
