Note: Margaret Faust (daughter of John Foust and Christina Ely) was first married to David Downing. They had one child, Elizabeth. David Downing died in 1833, four months before Elizabeth was born. In 1835 Margaret married Elias Knapp. Elizabeth lived with them and is listed as such in the 1850 Williams County, Ohio census. Elizabeth later married George Springer. (Information on Margaret's first marriage researched by Mrs. Austin C. Knapp) After Elias Knapp's death in 1890, Margaret came to Owosso, Shiawassee County Michigan and lived with her son Ira Willard Knapp until her passing in 1901. (Information from Charles H. Knapp) DEATH OF AN OLD RESIDENT Margaret Foust Knapp, better known as "Grandma Knapp" fell asleep at 12:30 oclock this morning, at the home of her son I.W. Knapp. Margaret Foust was born in Morrow Co., Ohio, Oct. 10, 1813. At the age of twenty-one she was united in marriage to E.J. Knapp. Nine children came to bless the home, four of whom survive her. About eleven years ago her husband was called home. For the past eight years she has resided with her son, I.W. Knapp. The past year she has been confined to her bed, not through illness, but because of old age, and a general breakdown of the system. Mrs. Knapp was a member of the Methodist church at Chesaning, but on account of inability to attend services had not transferred her membership to Owosso. Rev. Deajardine will conduct the funeral services at the home, one and one-half miles south of the city, Sunday afternoon at four oclock. The body will be taken to Ohio for burial, leaving here on the early train Monday morning. Four sons, one a resident of Litchfield, two of Coleman, and one of Owosso, together with a host of friends mourn the death of Mrs. Knapp. (Margaret Knapp's obituary, 22 Nov. 1901) Both Elias and Margaret are buried at the Liggett Cemetery, Florence Township, Williams County Ohio. Margaret was sometimes called "Peggy." Some sources give Margaret's birthday as October 10 rather than October 13. Margaret's family can be traced all the way back to 1550 in Germany and is included in the excellent and monumental book by Dr. Howard Faust entitled "Faust/Foust Family In Germany and America." Margaret Foust is listed on page "E21" in that book.
