Notes
a. Note:   I know that Christina Ely's father was named Michael Ely. I have used the information given below to prove that her father was this Michael Ely, who along with his family was in the same places as the Fousts and Knapps, and at exactly the right times as well. He and/or his children were in Cardington, Morrow County, Ohio, and Marion Co., Ohio the same time as the Knapp's and Fousts. The evidence that shows he is the father of Christina Ely Foust is impressive. Consider all of the following.
MICHAEL ELY born c.1750 d. bef. 1830 in Morrow Co, Ohio. He and his family are in Buffalo Twp. bef. 1778 (then Ohio Co, Va)- went between 1800 - 1809 to Sunbury, Delaware Co, Ohio -moved in 1822 to Cardington, Morrow Co. Occupation: blacksmith.
Michael Ely, called "Jr" , was a blacksmith, and was in what is now Buffalo Township, Washington County Pennsylvania by 1778. He moved west about 1799 and was in Delaware County, Ohio in 1809.
The following data was found for Michael Ely "Jr": June 1778 on Ohio Co (Va) tax list - this is now Buffalo Twp June 1779 signed call for Rev. Joseph Smith Nov 1779 on Ohio Co militia list 1782 private in Capt Eleazar Williamson's company 1783 taxed for 100 acres, 1 horse, 3 cows, 6 sheep 1790 census - 1 son under 16, 5 daughters 1798 house worth $20 1800 Dec 17 "late of Washington County", sold blacksmith tools 1809 at Sunbury, Ohio 1822 to Cardington, Ohio, where he died a few years later Source for the above information on Micheal Ely and family, and the Wolf family, was the Raymond Martin Bell Anthology.
"Among the earliest of those who came at this time were the Foust families. Jacob Foust Jr., had come early to Peru with his brother John and came to this locality as early as 1814....Later their father Jacob Foust Sr., with the rest of the family came and took up their residence in Peru. In 1822, desiring to find more room, they came to Cardington... Another family was that of the Ely's. They came originally from Pennsylvania to Sunbury Township, in Delaware County, where they remained until the summer of 1822, when Micheal, with his son Peter and his family, came to Cardington, and entered an eighty acre farm on lot 28, east of the Fousts, where the elder Ely lived until his death." -(THE HISTORY OF MORROW COUNTY-1880, page 322.)
So as you can see Jacob Foust, the father of John Foust, lived next door to Micheal Ely in Cardington. Jacob's son John Foust married a young lady named Christina Ely. Add to that the fact that John Foust's wife's name is Christina, just like Micheal Ely's wife Christina Wolf, and we have a pretty strong case. It looks like Jacob Foust's son and Micheal Ely's daughter got married.
Since John Foust and Christina Ely had their first child in 1812 they must have been married somewhere around 1811. So the two family's knew each other then. It looks like when the Fousts moved to Cardington they invited Christina's father and his family to make the move with them and they bought adjoining properties. (-WK)
From an article in the genealogical newsletter KEYHOLE, XI, 109 (July 1983)
Michael Ely "Jr" b c1752 m c1775 Christina Wolf b Nov 25-1754, daughter of Peter Wolf, who was in (what is now) East Hanover Twp, Dauphin County in 1775. Their known children were: Peter Ely b 1787 m Elizabeth --- in Matteson, Wis in 1872 Christian Rosanna b 1793 d 1870 Delaware Co, Ohio m John Williamson I think the above child listed as "Christian' is in reality his daughter Christina Ely. I have found that a great many Pennsylvania German women were named "Christian" and later Americanized their names to "Christina." In addition, Peter Wolf's daughter's name was recorded as "Christiana." Christina Ely Foust was named after her mother, Christiana Wolf Ely. Christina was born in 1790 so the order in which this child is listed above is right for Christina as well. All records I have found of Michael Ely Jr. indicate that he only had one son named Peter, who looks to have been named after his maternal grandfather, Peter Wolf. The Christian Ely listed above is most certainly Christina Ely who married John Foust.(-WK-)
