  All of Samuels children were from his first wife, Cynthia Cutler. Samuel conducted asheries for years in Westfield Township. He sold the asheries and in 1853 he moved his family to Hillsdale County, Michigan where he bought 160 acres. He returned Ohio in 1865 and lived in Williams County. He opened up a drygoods store in Montpelier, Williams County, Ohio. Later he sold his business and bought a 100 acre farm. He died in Williams County, Ohio in 1892 but he was buried at the Morgan Cemetery on Foust Road in Hillsdale, Michigan. He was once a trustee of Morrow County, Ohio for 5 years.

  Samuel purchased 110 acres of land in Jefferson Twp., Hillsdale County, Michigan in section 24, in 1853 and moved his family there from Morrow County, Ohio. In 1860 he was elected Director of the newly created school district #3 in Hillsdale County. He provided a 1/2 acre section of his property for the new school. He was also involved in the formation of the Foust Church there which was at first non-denominational, but was later associated with the Baptist and Wesleyan Methodist churches.
