Note:
"Gilbert", named for his freat grandmother Janet Gilbert in Scotland, farmed at home for some years, then went to business college. On finishing his course he started a coal and wood business in Guelph and after a few years branched out into the lumber business. He travelled to Britain and the United States to buy suitable building materials for his firm. When the lumber business was no longer a paying project, he bought a fruit and tobacco farm at Courtland in Norfolk county which he carried on 'til his sudden death in 1944. He was an elder in St. Andrew's Presbyterian Church at Guelph for 44 years and served for several years on the Board of Education. In 1889 he married Jessie McLean of Badenoch, who survived him 'til 1949. They had a family of 5.
"Gilbert" is buried in the crown cemetary in Puslinch, Ontario.
