Notes
a. Note:   As a young man, Franz Eschenbrenner worked as a border guard on the Rhine River. He met Rosi na Bruderle, who lived in Alsace, France. Family lore is that he used to swim the river (on e strain swimmer!) with his clothes on top of his head to go see his sweetheart. They marrie d in the 1850s and--because of political reasons--emigrated to New Orleans, where all their c hildren were born. They were living in New Orleans as early as 1856. Franz was listed as a sh oemaker, a trade he probably learned from his father. In 1872, Franz and all the family except Louis moved to Houston in 1872. Rosina died in 1874 , either in childbirth (family), or dysentery (death notice in Weekly Houston Telegraph). Aft er the death of his son, Charles, in a flood in 1881, Franz was never the same and lived wit h his daughters, going from house to house. At the age of 80, he had a stroke while cleaning the graves of his wife and son, became depr essed, and died, either by drinking liniment (family lore) or of senility and old age (obitua ry in the Houston Post, May 12, 1912). Franz has been described as a tall thin man with red hair.--Told to Mary Jane Lee Mayfield b y Josephine Eschenbrenner and Emilie Eschenbrenner Ladd. This story is romantic, but probably not true. According to George Lewis, Franz emigrated t o New Orleans about 1843, or when he was 11 years old.
