a. Note:   On October 17, 1817, Jacob Rendleman arrived from Rowan County, N. C. and commenced the opening of a large farm right in the midst of the Shawnee and Kaskaskia Indians. He was appointed one of the commissioners to lay out the county seat and superintended the erection of the public buildings-a courthouse and jail. He was highly esteemed as a good farmer, faithful public servant, and a man of great public spirit. He had a large family of sons and daughters, who, with their offspring, now form a large part of our best citizens and are esteemed throughout as our most trustworthy and reliable yeomanry. Among those of his immediate family yet living are Jacob, Henry, and John S. Rendleman, good men and true, the center around which revolves in turn a numerous progeny.--Dr. Sidney S.
