a. Note:   Thomas Whitson was born in Berk County, N. C. and married there. His wife's name was Sophia, a lso a native of Berk Co. Their first child was born there. In 1811 they arrived in what wa s to be Jackson Co. and settled at what was later called Crab Orchard. They stayed for onl y a short time, leaving for Louisiana Territory and settling at Mine L. Motte, in what is no w St. Francois County, Missouri. In 1815 they returned to Crab Orchard and then located finally at Bi g Hill where they died. Thomas participated in the War of 1812 and was at the surrender and Treaty with the Fox Indi ans at Portage de Sioux. Thomas and Sophia had eleven children. Thomas Whitson, settled first in St. Francois County, Missouri, between 1811 and 1813, and then i n Jackson County, Illinois, before July 1815. During the War of 1812, he served as a private in C aptain Absolom Cox's Company Mounted, Illinois Militia, from Aug. 16, 1815 until October 13 , 1815, when he was discharged because of illness. He was paid $6.66 per month and $.40 a da y allowance for his horse. For his two months service he earned $36.49. (Taken from his servi ce record).
