a. Note:   According to the 1878 history of Jackson County, Thomas East was born in France and stowed a way on a ship for America. The history says "having gone on board ship and being an orphan wi thout any home, he was brought to America, not so much from his desire to visit the new world , but from the fact of his being on board the ship. He was not found until the ship had bee u nder way for several days, therefore was not landed until they reached New Orleans, landing i n that city in the year of 1801." He arrived in Illinois in 1818, and is listed in the 1820 U . S. Census as a Jackson County resident. (Also according to the history and the 1850 U. S. C ensus, Thomas was born in 1799, which would have made him about 2 when he stowed away! I wond er what the real story is?)
