Notes
a. Note:   Mrs. Mary Underwood, whose death we mentioned last week Jan. 3, 1894), was 92 years old last July and was born in North Carolina, and came here in 1847 and has since lived in Union County. She was the mother of fourteen children, 7 boys and 7 girls, and all these lived to have children of their own, and every one of them were church members too. Mrs. Underwood united at an early age with the Baptist Church and was always a faithful member of the same. There are now living of her descendants near six hundred in all; children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren. There are few who attain the great age of Grandma Underwood, or who live such a life of usefulness as she did. She was one of those good industrious Christian mothers who have done so much toward developing and making our country what it is, and to whom we who are younger owe so much. Her funeral sermon was preached by Rev. C. Allen at Mount Tabor Church and her body laid to rest in the cemetery adjoining. To the family we extend sympathy and although they may sadly miss the dear mother who spared to them so long, yet they have her assurance that she has entered through the pearly gates and is now enjoying the reward of a life well spent."-- Jonesboro (Illinois) Gazette, Jan. 13, 1894
