a. Note:   Mrs. Anna Brendel, 98, oldest resident in Mascoutah and one of the oldest in St. Clair count y died at the Brendel homestead in Mascoutah, where she lived with her daughter, Mrs. Josep h Rist, at 12:50 this morning of complications due to the infirmities of age. Born in Germany, Nee Anna Blank, Mrs. Brendel came to the United States in 1852 at the age o f 18, settling in the vicinity of Mascoutah where she did housework. The late John Brendel, w ho was to be here husband, accompanied her from Germany, but they became separated after arri ving in the United States and it was not until along in 1865 that Brendel, who had hired ou t as a farm hand near New Baden, discovered that his sweetheart was employed not far distance . After their reunion, Mrs. Brendel, then Miss Anna Blank, was seated in the Mascoutah Catholi c Church on Sunday when to her surprise banns were announced. Mr. Brendel had arranged all matters without consulting his bride-to-be. When he called tha t evening to see her, he was obliged to give an account of his actions, which after being ful ly explained, were approved. She and John Brendel were married at the Holy Childhood Catholic church in Mascoutah by Rev . Father Peter Rosendahl, February 27, 1865, with a Miss Haas and John G. Haas as witnesses . Following their marriage they lived on a farm west of New Baden for three years, moving the n to the Peter Theobald farm four and a half miles northeast of Mascoutah where they lived fo r 30 years. Then they moved into what is now known as the Brendel homestead in Mascoutah wher e he lived until his death January 25, 1900 (?), and she until her death today. Up until her death Mrs. Brendel retained much of her vigor and her faculties were active. Th ough deaf, she was in good health and was able to move about in her garden and her yard. Sh e was able, up to a short time ago, to read her newspaper and Bible without spectacles. Mrs. Brendel was born in Albayern (?), Germany, February 16, 1834. She was a member of the Altar Society and the Poor Souls Association of the Holy Childhood C atholic church in Mascoutah. Surviving her are seven children: Barbara, wife of George Reiss of Belleville, a laborer, re siding at 609 Wabash avenue; George Brendel, single, residing on the farm of Ernst Moore, si x miles south of Mascoutah; Mrs. Katherine Weber, of New Athens, Illinois, Agnes, wife of Joe Ris t, who resides with her mother in the Brendel homestead on North John street, Mascoutah; Joh n Brendel, a miner residing in Mascoutah; Conrad Brendel, also engaged in that occupation an d residing in that city; and Joe Brendel, single, a farmer employed on the Bechtold farm, tw o and one-half miles east of Mascoutah; 27 grandchildren and 26 great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be held at 8:45 Thursday morning from the home to the Holy Childhood C atholic church, Rev. Fr. Ferdinand Weyrich officiating. Burial will be in the Mascoutah Catho lic cemetery.--The Daily Advocate, Belleville, Illinois, Oct. 24, 1932
