The entire remarkable ensemble is in a state of preservation entire front facade of the building is unaltered. The bracketed comice is somewhat Italianate in feeling. The front porch, with its balustrade and woodwork is somewhat Gothic in feeling and blends well with the front doorway. The wisteria growing along the porch is very appropriate to a building of this type. The building is 5 bays long, yet only 2 bays deep. The floor plan is a two room center hall type with fireplaces in the gable walls. The lights are 4 over 4 casements with a heavy center munion and louvered shutters. The building has a flat room and is attached to another building, which pre dates the Gothic structure and is probably from the 18th century. The older building appears to have been a one and half story, two or three room cottage. The walls in this older portion have brick nogging. Brick is laid in an American or common bond and there are stone lintils over all the openings in the 1868 structure. The woodwork on this portion is quite well done ands immeasurably to this, once of the most attractive buildings in the center of Basking Ridge. It present appearance is largely due to it ownership by the local architectural firm ofHalsey and Ryder. This building is truly representative of the Hight form that vernacular architecture took in the mid 19th century in a relatively rural community like Basking Ridge. Brick buildings like this, especially in Victorian Gothic or Gothic revival style, are very rare in Somerset County.
