West, of Des Moines, died Thursday, January 31, in that city, the immediate cause of death being an attack of the grippe, although for a year her health has not been good. Mrs. West was one of the pioneers of Des Moines, having moved there with her husband in 1853. She was universally honored and respected by all who knew her, and for years has been closely connected with all charitable work of the city. She was a member of the Presbyterian church. Last July Capt. and Mrs. West celebrated the 61st anniversary of their marriage, and this was made a day of great rejoicing. Mrs. West was the mother of Mrs. Norman Lichty, of Des Moines. One daughter was the wife of B. F. Allen, and died in 1877. Two sons are living. A trait of Mrs. West that was especially mentioned in the extended notice given in the Register was her love for shade trees, and these she planted in various places in Des Moines. Where ever she lived she planted trees, and now these will be reminders of her.
