I have been doing some research on this family involving a Della Brown Wingo whom I believe to be the elder sister of your great grandmother. Della married a Dr. James C Wingo and according to the 1880 census was living in Dawsonville, GA where they had 3children. Her husband also was a preacher and became a missionary of sorts out west in the Indian Territory. Mrs. Wingo eventually lived with her daughter in her later years, dying in Jasper, AL in 1934 at 84 years of age. It was from her death record that Ilearned she was the daughter of Littleton and Rachel Brown. My purpose in conducting this search is to try and get some information onone of her sons, Claud Wingo, who was killed fighting in the Philippines in 1901. I am trying to write a book on the company wherein Claud served and seek some personal data on Claud, such as date of birth and also I am trying to get a photograph of him. I have contacted some of the Wingo relatives but most never heard of Claud Wingo and so I am hoping to see if the Brown family might have some information. ****************** Subj: RE: Littleton Brown Family Date: 4/8/03 10:01:30 Info from the Death Certificate of Della A Wingo, widow of J. C. Wingo (Cert # 28721) She died in Parrish Alabama (Walker County) on December 21, 1934 at the age of 84 years, 7 months and 28 days and was the daughter of Littleton L Brown of NC and Rachel Cooper of GA. She died at 9:00 PM of chronic nephritis. The informant for this information was her doctor, Giles W Jones. She is buried in the cemetery of Jasper, AL beside her son-in-law Felix A Merrell (1874-1953) and her infant granddaughter Elena Christian who died October 12, 1905. There is a headstone marked for her daughter and it is listed as "Lavona Merrell 1879- ". The daughter is not buried there and there is a possibility that she re-married and is buried elsewhere. There is no indication as to her place of birth but the army records of Claud Wingo lists his mother as his next of kin as Mrs. Della Wingo of Carrollton, GA. Info from the 1880 Census for Dawsonville, GA: Wingo family lives in Dawsonville, GA where he is a Physician. Jas. C. Wingo, aged 27 years, born in SC. Both his parents are from SC Della A Wingo, aged 29 years, born in GA. Her father born in NC, mother in SC Children are: McDuffie (S) aged 4 years and Orie, (D) aged 1 year The son is Tullius McDuffy Wingo, born July 1873 in GA and who died in May 1948 in El Paso, TX where he had been a prominent banker. The daughter's name is is questionable. The various census records are hard to read and at time it appears as "Ona" and other times as "Ora". Note the tombstone has her name as Lavona but the death record of her son, Charles Henry Merrell (1903-1981) lists his mother as Evona Sexton. The name Sexton may have been the name of her second husband. To further complicate the issue, records of the Merrell family which I got from the internet (an address which I now cannot locate) states she is Ora Myrtle Wingo. 1900 Census for Dublin, TX. Wingo family lives in Dublin (Erath County) Texas where he is a Minister His date of birth is listed as July 1851 in SC and they have been married 27 years. Della A Wingo is listed as being born in April 1850 in GA. She has 4 of 7 children who are living Only one child is living at home: Harrington G born November 1891 in Texas. There is also a servant living in the home, which they rent. Another son, T. M. Wingo, born July 1873, lives with his wife Elena (born in KS in July 1873) in El Paso, TX. He is a cashier in a bank. They have a daughter, Grace, born January 1897 in NM and son, Lowden (born June 1899 in OR). 1900 census for Jasper, AL Della?s daughter, Ora, lives with her husband Felix Merrell (a bookkeeper) in Jasper, AL. The other son, Claud is listed as the son in law of Minerva Watts living in her home in Galveston, TX with Claud's 17-year-old wife Daisy. Claud's occupation is listed as an ?agent? while Daisy still attends school. This was evidently a brief marriage and it may not have been recognized as a legal marriage. A year after this census, Claud was killed and the widow never filed an application for a pension. By 1910, Daisy Wingo was remarried to a man named Mercer since @@ 1904. By 1910 the Wingo family appears to have been split as I never ran across the name of James C Wingo again although he lived at various times in the Oklahoma Territory, Wyoming and Arkansas. he apparently divided his time as a minister and doctor and perhaps had a wandering nature. His wife Della returned to Alabama and from now on lives with her daughter and her family. In 1910 Mrs.. Wingo and her son Harrington live in Carbon Hill, AL with the Merrells. In 1920 the Merrells have moved to jasper, AL and Della and Harrington follow. Sometime after this Harrington moves to Florida; the Merrells remain in Jasper until just before World War II when they move to Montgomery, AL. Their son Charles lives there also and works for the state. Mr. Merrell dies in 1953 and after that his widow departs a few years later. The son remains there and marries three times but there are no children. Tullius Wingo and his family remain in El Paso where they are well-known. He and his wife raise two children. The daughter moves to California with her husband and the son remains in El Paso until his death in 1969. Upon the death of Tullius in 1948, the mother moves to California for her health and possibly lives with her daughter and family. Her date of death is unknown but the daughter and husband (name Aiken) both die in the 1970s. There was one adopted daughter who about 1945 married a man named Merrett, supposedly related to family that manufactured kitchen ranges. I have never been able to trace her. Now to return to the Merrells. Felix A Merrell, was born December 18, 1874 in Carroll County, Georgia, the son of William Washington Merrell (1815-1900) a lawyer and Lucy Naomi Awtrey. Lucy was his second wife and evidently the mother of Felix. The family records indicate that Felix's wife was named Ora Myrtle Wingo. I also noted in the family record that one of Felix's brothers, Ed A Merrell (born November 17, 1865) married Ella Jane Brown. Is there a connection? Note that Claud Wingo indicated his mother was from Carroll County and there is a possibility that these families knew each other and Dr and Mrs. Wingo met in Carroll county. The name Wingo is very popular in Virginia and the Carolina. There are many Wingos living in the Spartanburg, SC area but I was never to trace Dr Wingo's roots. No background information is known on Dr. Wingo and where or when he died. Children of Della A Wingo:
