Moore: Paulding New Era: February 8, 1883 A Shooting Affair: A serious shooting affray occurred last Saturday night at Mr. W.K. Carter's saloon and the cause is hereby explained: About two months ago, Mr. J.R. Jones, while drinking, walked into Mrs. S.S. Moore's saloon and called for a drink of whiskey; and Mr. Moore refused to serve it to him. After taking some threats, Mr. Jones went away, but had been trying to pick a ___ with him all the time up till yesterday evening, when Jones came in drunk and began playing pool with some other men who were drinking, and being afraid that they would tear his table, Mr. Moore asked them to please stop playing until they got sober, so they quit, no one taking offense but Mr. Jones. Nothing more passed between the two men until about eight o'clock at night, when Mr. Moore, after closing his bar, started home and stopped in at Mr. W.K. Carter's bar, to see a whiskey drummer. While Mr. Moore was ___ to the drummer, Mr. Jones, who was standing in the billiard saloon came up to him, drew his pistol and putting it to Moore's breast, told him that if he moved he would shoot his G-d D-d heart out. Whereupon Moore caught his arm, the pistol firing as he did so, the ball taking effect in the arm of a bystander by the name of Rogers. Mr. Moore then fired his pistol at Jones four times, one of the balls taking effect in Mr. Jones's left side. No blame can be attached to either Mr. Carter or his clerks in the bar. J.R. Jones, the man that was shot in the ___ Tuesday night last, was brought to the drug store and into our office, which is in the rear end of the building where surgical aid was most skillfully rendered. The ball, which is 32 caliber, entered the body near the cartilage of the eighth and ninth ribs in front and a little to the left and passing around a short distance again, went straight through crashing all tissues with which it came in contact, until it found a lodgment underneath the deep seated muscles of the back, about four or five inches from the spinal column. Dr. Connally extracted the ball and quite a number of fragments of the rib in our presence and we having witnessed the operation and Jones's great suffering, and being familiar with all the surrounding in the matter, are still convinced that in a vast majority of instances of this character, "discretion is the better part of valor." Just before going to press, Dr. Connally pronounces his condition altogether unfavorable and it will be t wo or three days before a decided opinion can be given. ******** Paulding New Era: July 25 1884 S.S. Moore killed Boss Jones. Shot with pistol. He was arrested, tried and acquitted. Stephen S. Moore was married previously to Sophia E. (maiden name unknown) and had a number of children.
