Per email from Barbara Henderson (1-29-07), Mark "was a fugitive on the run for beating up Littleton's wife, Elizabeth. He seriously injured her, according to a newspaper article I found, and wa on the run for days."

On Last Saturday Mark Brown, formerly of this county, but now claiming his home in Cherokee, and who is well known as a desperate character, knocked down and kicked his step-mother, Mrs. Brown, who resides near New Hope, in the face, and otherwise maltreated her. Mrs. Brown is said to be in a very critical condition. Sheriff Cooper and others have been in search of the fugitive, but thus far he has successfully eluded the vigilance of the law.

Marcus A. Brown, who has recently been advertised so extensively for an assault with intent to murder, in this county some two or three weeks ago, and who has been eluding his pursuers so successfully, was captured by Mr. Rufus Pearson last Saturday morning in the vicinity of his brother-in-law's, and arranged before Justices W.A.J. Lee and W.M. Wooddall, at this place. Brown waived trial, would not make bond, and went to jail. Mr. Lit Brown, father of Marcus, is a very popular and upright and true man, and has the sympathy of the people generally.

Wingo's and Mark A. Brown on the 1900 census in Erath Co TX. I also found a newspaper article about Mark which I am attaching. I seems as though after the "incident" involving his stepmother Elizabeth Wills Brown, Mark murdered a man in Erath Co TX. I also found him in later census--1920 Dallas Co TX and I believe 1930 Dallas TX. On the 1920 Dallas Co TX census he is married to a woman named Stella who I believe is the same woman who he was boarding with in the 1900 Erath Co TX census. I could not find him in 1910--perhaps he was in jail. There are also other newspaper articles about James C. Wingo and I will send those as well if you are interested
