Found his death on microfilm of TN Death Records - September 24, 1926 in S
 ullivan Co., TN #23106.
Received copy of death certificate. He died in Kingsport, Sullivan Co., T
 N. on September 24, 1926. He was buried in Sevierville. Cause of death w
as chronic valvular heart disease. He was married at time of death, but t
he spouse signed her name "Mrs. NEW Stokely of Kingsport, TN" with no indi
cation of her first or maiden name. Record verifies that his father was D
avid V. Stokely and mother Sarah Helen Allen, all of them born in Cocke Co
., TN. Birth date on record is June 30, 1845, but we know that 1845 is i
ncorrect -- from census records, plus on death certificate age is giv
en as 71, which would make birth year 1855. Also name given is Nathan Edw
 in, not Edward.

Note: on the 1930 Census, there is an Ellen Stokely living in Bristol, Sul
livan Co., TN with her daughter Irene Unberger. Ellen is 63, born 18
66 in TN; she has no job, but her daughter was a bookkeeper in drug stor
e; possible she is Nathan's last wife??? The fact that daughter is a boo
kkeeper is a clue- since Nathan had a business school it is told. Not
e: in searching 1920 Census for Nathan, I could not find him, but did fi
nd Ellen and a daughter Emma -- Ellen already widowed in 1920 - Nathan di
ed in 1927. Still since daughter "Emma" - age 22 is a bookeeper in a drug
store, I'm thinking Nathan is involved somehow.

The following is an excerpt from the diary of Nathan's daughter Eva Mae St
okely, dated October 10, 1931: "Talked to ex-Governor Hooper about Dadd
 y. He recalled one plank of his platform as Gov. as being on conjuncti
on of Latin verbs as he taught." [this may go along with the Goodspe
ed statements of Stokely having a Baptist seminary in TN]

Received from M Stokely on 10-8-07, an image of a newspaper article s
ent to her from Mark Lemon. It is from the Atlanta Constitution, dated Fe
 bruary 22, 1906:
  Headline: MRS. STOKELY ASKS DIVORCE
Refusing to attend prayer meeting, husband choked her.
Alleging that when she refused to attend and hear her husband lead pray
er meeting, he seized and hoked her, Mrs. Ella B. Stokely, wife of N.E.
 W. Stokely, proprietor of a business school at 81 Marietta Street, yesterd
ay morning filed suit for divorce in the superior court.
Mrs. Stokely asks for a total divorce, the custody of her four children, w
hom she states her husband is an unfit person to take care of, and tempora
ry and permanent alimony. The petition, filed by Attorney James L. Key, w
as read and considered by Judge Roan, who assumed jurisdiction in the abse
nce from the city of Judge Pendleton, and a date was set for its hearing.
The petitioner states that she did not go to the prayer meeting because s
he entertained doubts of her husband's religious professions.
She alleges that on another occasion he threated to strike her with a hamm
er and was only deterred from so doing by her screams. She says that on o
ne occasion when she accused him of being guilty of infidelity that he fal
sely charged her with the same and that he used abusive language."
