a. Note:   or AL. He was in the group which protected General Joseph Wheeler. He apparently admired the General so much that he named a son after him. He was a private in Co. G, I Regiment AL Cavalry. Paid $194.33 on December 14, 1863 for service and for use of horse. March 14, 1864 appears on a receipt roll for clothing for the Civil War. May 3, 1865 paroled at Charlotte, NC for war service. This was a standard parole given to all soldiers.

My grandfather Joseph was 7 years old at the time. The 1870 census is the last record I have of him. In 1880 the family was on the Calhoun Co Census ED 9, Sheet 23, Line 18. Nathan fought in the Civil War for Alabama. He was a private in Co. G, 1st Regiment Alabama Cavalry. This cavalry was the escort of a General Joseph Wheeler. Do you see where my great-grandfather got his name?"
