"James Madison and Brother Albert Lafayette went to Civil War. The women kept farming, they made 4 bales of cotton, picked seed out, buried or hid it. When war was over it was worth its weight in gold. Say, 2,000 pounds of gold. That is why these 2 Smiths had more than the other Smiths. They got land from State of Arkansas, then they bought a lot of land. Most of it was in Union County, some in Columbia County. Lafayette land still in the Smith family. James Madison land has been sold. This is what we call the Big Hickory Bunch. All but Lafayette. Some graves are lost, these all have head stones.. Almon & Bee".
