Hi Dave Received a copy of Moses & Ellen's marriage certificate this morning so I thought I'd share the information with you. They were married on 1st August 1842 and you told me in the Parish Church in Preston. Moses was 22 years old a bachelor living at Alfred Street, Preston. He was a shoe maker and his fathers name was Thomas Cook, a weaver. Ellen Duxbury was 22 years old and a spinster. She was also a weaver living at Park Road, Preston and her father who was deceased at the time had also been called Thomas and he was a farmer. The witnesses were Susanna Duxbury and William Riley. Neither Ellen nor Susanna were able to sign their names and they made a 'mark' on the certificate. If you want a copy of the certificate I'll have a photocopy made and send it on to you. With regard to the births of Moses & Ellen and their deaths and the marriage of Moses & Betsy, I am trying to find out if the Quakers had their own records but I cannot find anything on our St Catherine House records that match up with any of those events. I'll be in contact if I find anything else out. Beryl.
I have another little gleam of info about Moses Cook He owned a Clog shop, where he would make clogs for the local factory workers who worked at the cotton mills. The mill floors were always wet through the cotton process He had a long counter along one wall. Written in bold large black letters above the counter was, NO TICK meaning that it was a cash in hand business only. My Aunty told me that the shop was very dark, as was the house that Moses and his two sisters lived in before he was married. She also said that the sisters were very grim. She got this info from my Nanna Winifred. Denise
He is buried in the non-conformist section of the Preston Borough Cemetery in plot L-626. Unlike in the US where only one person is put into a plot, in England there can be many. In this plot, there are four persons buried. A.Moses himself. Beryl gave me a copy of his death certificate that I will send to you separately. He died April 30, 1887 and was buried on May 3rd, aged 63. B.Buried May 13, 1891, his grandson, Frederick T. Quayle, 12 months old. His last address was 28 S Meadow Lane. C.Buried March 8, 1901, was Ellen of 5 Fishergate, aged 82. D.Buried August 9, 1905, Thomas Eastham, grandson, aged 1 day of 26 Bedford Street.
  The grave is located at N53 46' 9.3", W2 39' 37.5".

Note:   The FHC Film No. 0094006, Parish Registers, 1642-1948, Church of England. St. John's Church (Preston, Lancashire), give the marriage of MOSES COOK and ELLEN DUXBURY, 01 Aug 1842, at St. John's, Preston. We find this couple in the 1881 Census of Preston, giving Moses at the age of 60, a boot and shoe maker living at 4 Moor Lane, Preston, along with his wife Ellen, 61 years old, a cotton weaver, and their unmarried daughter, Mary A., aged 18 years, also a cotton weaver.
Our Margaret's marriage certificate gives Moses' occupation as that of a boot maker, which agrees with the 1881 Census showing Moses, a boot and shoe maker. The clincher is this: when our Margaret was married, her address was given as "Moor Lane, Preston". The 1881 Census shows Moses and Ellen living at 106 Moor Lane in Preston. I think there is no question that this couple are the parents of our Margaret.
