Note: Duncan and family lived in guilford co NC at time of Elihu's birth. They then moved to Wayne co Ind and Esther was born. They went back to Guilford Co where Albert was born in 1838 and Duncan passed away and family moved to Indiana town unknown. certificate # 3913 a copy of a deed for Duncan Cameron Coffin of Randolph co Indiana. land purchase from Ohio in 1835. When Duncan died Susannah was left with three children. He died with out a will so his estate was administrated by John Rupert, Elihu Coffin,Duncan's father, and John Caldwell. Susannah petitioned the court and was granted a years allowance to support herself and her children. Petition for year's allowance This case coming on the be heard on reading of the petition and the argument and suggestion of the Counsel, it is declared by the Court that the petitioner Susannah Coffin is entitled to have a full year's support and maintenance for herself and family out the the personal estate of her deceased husband Duncan Cameron Coffin It is therefore ordered by the court that Mr W. Caldwell Esq. with Timothy Rupell, Richard Bowman, and Hiram Edwards three freeholders, be appointed to go on the premises of the deceased, view the same, and out of the stock, crop and provisions on hand, to allot and lay off to the petitioner a full and sufficient quantity for the comfortable support and maintenance of herself and family for one year, and in case there be a deficiency of stock, crop &c. on hand, then to assess a sum of money sufficient to make up said deficiency to complete a whole year's allowance and in addition thereto, appropriate and lay off to your petitioner one bed and its necessary furniture, and one wheel, and one pair of cards, to be the absolute property of the petitioner, and put her in possession of the same; and that then report to the next term of the Court agreeable to an act of Assembly.
