Notes
a. Note:   #243 Was a Tory. Went with his parents to Arlington, VT. Samuel Adams in 1777 formed a company of Tories from Arlington, Manchester, Sangate and other places for co-operating with Burgoyne's army. Their place of rendezvous was Abiel Hawley's tavern which was used also by the patriots for the same purpose. Settlers were startled by the abduction of Phineas Hurd (son-in-law of John Hawley). Hurd and Benjamin with a company went to Sangate & pursuaded the residents to deliver their arms to be in no condition to fight. The arms were used against them by the Tories. For this, Benjamin Eastman was arrested and reported to General Lincoln. Ben took the oath of allegiance and was released. He fought at Saratoga in the British army and was captured. When released, he and his brother Amherst travelled to Cornwall, Canada. He visited his brothers in Herkimer cty, NY and unsuccessfully urged them to join him in Cornwall. He became wealthy & offered his brother a fine farm if he would move to Canada. He had 19 children.
