a. Note:   Enlisted in spring of 1775 at 17 years in Capt. Phineas Porter's company of Waterbury, CT of the 1st regiment of Col. David Wooster of New Haven. Discharged December 14, 1775. Enlisted April 8, 1776 in Capt. David Smith's company, Col. Elmore of Sharon, for 1 year. Enlisted January 10, 1777 in Capt. Aaron Stevens' 5th company of Killingworth, Col. Herman Swift's 7th regiment for 3 years. This regiment fought at Germantown, wintered at Valley Forge 1777-1778 engaged in battle of Monmouth June 26, 1778 while encamped at White Plains, NY during the summer. Then wintered at Reading, CT 1778-1779. Served on the east side of the Hudson in summer of 1779. Regiment wintered at Morristown Huts 1779-1780 and he was discharged January 10, 1780. He was a pensioner with his last pension payment March 1829 in Mentz? 1798-1780 moved to Cairo, Oneida cty, NY, leaving his son Hezekiah and daughter Phebe bound out, taking his other children with him. In autumn of 1810 moved to Paris, Oneida cty, NY and then to Wolcott. Descended from a long line of English ancestors. From Sir Richard Ward of Harleston & Homersfield, Suffolk cty, England; Sir Roger Greenville; Edmund Sherman of Dedham, England the ancestor of the famous Sherman family in America.
