a. Note:   #495 When youg, he went to Ohio visiting Cincinnati, Columbus, Urbana and other cities. He contracted malaria and nearly lost his life. He had to remain in Urbana for nearly a year to recover. He then went down the Ohio & Mississippi rivers to Natchez where he taught a large & successful school. Here he converted and baptised in the "Father of Waters" as a member of the Baptist church. Soon was licensed to preach. Then went to Philadelphia studying theology with Dr. Stoughton, pastor of the Samson street church in Philidelphia. Received an appointment from the Foreign Missions to preach in Mississippi & Louisiana until stricken with yellow fever. Became pastor of a Baptist church in Cincinnati for 3 years of pleasure and prosperity. Spent a year at the mineral springs in Harrodsburg, KY. Then went to New York and planted the Stanton street church becoming one of largest & flourishing churches there. Several years later he returned to his native town. He built a home on his father's farm. After preaching in Landaff & adjoining town and held pastorates in Haverhill & Meredith, NH and in Rutland & Groton, VT. 1844 moved to WI. He studied French, Latin, Greek & Hebrew and versed in medical science.
