a. Note:   #512 Was the 4th child of David. Went to school at the town school in Loudon, NH then high school at Concord, NH for several winters. At 17 years was apprentice for 1 year at the bakery of Horn & Robertson in Concord. Then went to Limerick, ME and spent 2 years learning the trade of tanner & currier. At age 20 he went to Conway & built a tannery. In 1816 he returned to Loudon & married Rhoda and they went at once to Conway and 2 years later moved into the house they lived in for 54 years & all their children were born. He expanded his tannery buisiness to include shoemaking & harness making until about 1835 when he opened a general merchandise store for several years. He built a paper mill which burned after 2 weeks and then built a second one for many years. He was deputy sheriff for 9 years. Represented Conway in legislature for 2 terms starting in 1842 as a Democrat. In June 1842 he introduced & passed a bill to incorporate the South Conway Seminary which was established soon after. This institution was quite celebrated and educated many prominent people. It's 1st principal was Mr. Walsh who was at one time an interpreter to Napoleon. He was Lt. in the militia, selectman, juryman, coroner & several times delegate from Carroll cty to the Democratic state convention. 10 years after his wife died he sold out and went to live with his son Haskett in Minneapolis, MN.
