a. Note:   #622 When 3 years his father died. When 7 years he saw one of his playmates drown and long after would not let his own children play at the river. In 1806 His mother sold the place & married Josiah & moved to Leverett. Was apprenticed as shoemaker, but disliked it. Was bound out to Silas Ball of Townsend, VT and at 21 years received certificate of the carpenter & joiner's trade. Worked 1st 3 years in Westfield, MA. Joined military company (the only one thereabouts not ordered to Boston in 1814). Worked 1 season in Pompy, NY and visited Niagara Falls & the battlefied of Lundy's Lane. About 1820 settled in Hadley, MA. For $240 bought from his father-in-law 2 1/2 acres in Hadley and built a 1 1/2 story house. He married the next year.
