a. Note:   #779 Was connected with General Warren (who was killed at the battle of Bunker Hill) through his father, Jeremiah. He worked on his father's farm until he was 15 years old and attended the district schools of the neighborhood. In 1840 he attended Sanbornton Academy in Sanbornton, NH. In the fall of 1841 and spring of 1842 he attended Gilmanton Academy in Gilmanton, NH. From 1843 to 1846 he taught school. He entered Wesleyan University in Middletown, CT in 1847 and graduated in 1851. 1851 he began the study of law in Middletown and taught classes in the high school during the time. From 1853 to 1861 he was clerk of courts of Middlesex cty, CT. Was elected to the Middletown common council in 1854. In 1855 was elected treasurer of the state of CT at the age of 29 years. Was chosen city attorney of Middletown in 1858. With him originated the system of bipartisan registrars of elections. He was delegate to the National Republican convention of 1860 & 1864. Was postmaster of Middletown from 1861 to 1869. Was a member of the board of alderman in 1875. Was a judge of the city court from 1884 to 1895 when he retired by age limitation. Was the senior member of the Middlesex cty bar and the oldest survivor who held the office of postmaster there, or clerk of the superior court. Also the oldest surviving CT state treasurer. He founded the Calef Oratorical Prize in Wesleyan University in 1862. Was president of the Alumni Association of Wesleyan University from 1862 to 1866 and trustee there from 1862 to 1880. Was lecturer on consitutional law there in 1878. He had a large practice in the state & US courts. Was president of the Middletown Gaslight Company and director of several financial institutions. Was well known Mason as a grand junior warden of the grand lodge of CT. Lived in Middletown, CT. When he retired he was referee of bankruptcy under the new US bankrupcty law. He took great interest in Eastman family genealogy spending great time and money searching record, especially the old land & probate records at Exeter. Among the probate records he found the will of Thomas Eastman & his wife Abigail French which established beyond doubt his line of ancestry.
