Note: This is the known beginning of our EASTON line. This is Ambrose Easton's great-grandfather and therefore, my ggg-grandfather. In addition to looking for more information on John Easton I (1790-1840), I'm looking for his parents names' and information on them. Visit my website at http://www.geocities.com/eastonhistory ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Some records say John Easton I (1790-1840) was born in Pennsylvania and other records say Canada(Eng) : -Death record of his son John Easton II (1822-1911) say his father was born in PA -Death record of his daughter Mary Jane Easton Goodpaster (1827-1899) say her father was born in Canada. -1880 Census record for his son John Easton II (1822-1911) list his father's birthplace as "PA" -1900 Census record for his son John Easton II (1822-1911) list his father's birthplace as "Canada (Eng)" ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ If you would like a 'genealogy report' of this family, please feel free to email me at eastonhistory@@fuse.net I do not have a date of birth on John Easton I but comparing the columns on 1820, 1830 and 1840 census, it looks like he was born About 1790. Because of the "Cotton's Keepsake' book, it is believed that John Easton and Joseph Peters were of 'some kin' to each other. So therefore, maybe John Easton came from Washington County, Pennsylvania to Dearborn County, Indiana before 1813 with the Peters family??? (The first record found of John Easton being in Dearborn County, Indiana is on May 8, 1813 when John Easton I (1790-1840) enlisted in the Indiana Militia). > From the History of Dearborn County, Indiana > "Stephen Peters (father of the Joseph Peters that killed John Easton and was suppose to be some kin to John Easton?), John Buffington, and James Walker are said to have entered into Dearborn County, Indiana in 1811 from Pennsylvania. From "Indiana War of 1812 Soldiers Militia" - Copyright 1984 - By: Charles M. Franklin. Page 13 - Dearborn County - Capt Charles Campbell's Co. - Indiana Militia - Enlisted: 8 May 1813 Discharged: 17 June 1813 John Easton - Private and Simon Peters - Private > are both listed here (Chris McHenry at the Lawrenceburg Indiana Library said in an email > "As far as I know, those lists of militiamen are the only ones available. What it means is that his only service was in a local group that patrolled the county looking for Indians, and not in the troops who fought in other places. Chris" There was a fire at the Dearborn County Courthouse in 1826 and all records at that time and before were lost in the fire. So there are no marriage records, etc. before 1826. So I have not found if John Easton and Mary Wallace married in Indiana or if they married in Kentucky (since her birthplace was KY). -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- As told by John Steuver (a close acquaintance of Jesse Easton), Jesse Easton use to say that his grandfather (John Easton I 1790-1840) was tall and weighed 204 lbs. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Census Notes for JOHN EASTON 1 (with my notes in parenthesis) : NOTE: Laughery Township ceased to exist on the 1st of June 1852 and was split into the Townships of Hogan and Washington. JOHN EASTON I was killed Christmas Day, December 25, 1840 at the home of Joseph Peters on Lower Dillsboro Road, Aurora, Dearborn County, Indiana at a family gathering. Another researcher found a document copy from the Lawrenceburg Public Library in Lawrenceburg, Indiana and mailed me a copy of it : Genealogical Data from Dearborn County, Indiana Commissioners' Records I - IV * Page 112 ; Jan 1841 : Allowed to David Kerr, inquest on body of John Easton $5.00. * Page 126 ; Mar 1841 : Allowed to David C. Hope, coffin for John Easton, pauper $4.00 From the book "Cotton's Keepsake" 1858 - page 398 - by Rev. Judge Aylett J. Cotton, Philom. " Wilmington - Formerly the county seat, is located on a very high ridge, some two and a half miles northwest from Aurora. In this jail, here, Dodd hung himself, and a stranger cut his throat; and right in the jail, I once married a happy couple - a novelty. Here George Goulding hung himself in a mill; here Joseph Peters killed John Eastman (should be EASTON) in an affray, was tried and acquitted, as a justifiable homicide. They were half-brothers or brothers-in-law - what a pity! Peters has an interesting family, who are often pained at the bare mention of the sad occurrence. Not at all, children; if it be your misfortune, it is not your fault, surely." *********************************************************************************************** The below was transcribed from the CIRCUIT COURT *COMPLETE RECORD* BOOK - APRIL 1841 TERM - found in the basement of the Dearborn County Courthouse, Lawrenceburg, Indiana : >>>>>> On Pages 288 through 290 : Pleas began and held at Wilmington in and for Dearborn County and State of Indiana before the Honerable Miles C.
