********************************************************************** SETTLED ACCOUNTS: Guardian Book, Martha Cochran, *********************************************************************** Bullitt Co. Guardian Book B p.287 Settled account of Martha A. COCHRAN Gdn. of Virginia L. EASTON and Kate R. EASTON infants of said Martha A. (and?)James EASTON dec'd made May 19, 1873. Guardian To Amt received from U.S. Gov 4th Sept 1869......................$509.33 " " received from same from 4th Sept 1869 to 4th March 1873 being $6.00 per month for each........$504.00 ------------ $1013.33 By Paid R. FRUEGLER Atty fee...........................1....20.00 " " Tomb Stones of Jas. EASTON ...............2....25.00 " " Amt paid preparing papers to draw money 75 cts each at 4 times per year (3 years and 6 months)............................10.50 " " Clk Fee Bill....................................9.65 " " Amt expended in educating schooling and clothing......................................500.00 -----------565.15 $ 448.18 In making this settlement I have not allowed the Guardian any commission although I am satisfied she has had a great deal of trouble and some expense in her attention to her wards estate nor have I charged her interest. The Gov. of U.S. allowed her wards at the rate of 72.00 per year from 1865 but from an examination of her certificate, she was not paid until 1869 & then only received $509.33, having paid fees at Wasington & some other expenses in procuring her wards claim. I have personal knowledge of the procurement of this claim, & of her trouble and know the condition of the Gdn. in a pecuniary sense, and I consider that $500.00 is a small allowance to her for the services expense the above allowed her. The Gdn. has exhibited to me two notes on Wm. SANDERS of $100.00 each, also note on Henry SANDERS for 180.00 also note on Henry SANDERS for 20.00 & one note on A. BROOKS for 30.00, making without counting interest in notes $430.00. These notes seem to be from the guardian Statements obtained by her ward's money and are about the amount found due by the Guardian. W. PHELPS County Judge being absent I have made this settlement as County Clerk & report the same for approval. ..............RJ MEYLER State of Kentucky Bullitt County...........Set I, RJ MEYLER Clerk of he Bullitt County Court certify that on the 19th day of May 1873, the foregoing Guardian Settlement was filed in open court and laid over one month for exceptions, and there being no exceptionshad thereto was on the 16th of June 1873 examined and approved by the court and ordered to be recorded which with this certificate I have done this 22nd day of July 1873. RJ MEYLOR Clerk by EW HALL D.C. Email on Bullit County listserv 12/04/05 : A few years ago, I learned that a home at Hillview in northern Bullitt County, was visited by the spirit of a Civil War soldier, moving kitchen chairs around. The site was owned by James Quertermous Sanders; his daughter Martha Ann married in 1856 to James Easton, who was killed at the Battle of Munfordville. Was James the restless spirit? The Sanders and Easton homes are no longer standing. A subdivision was put in on the property in the late 1960s and early 1970s. Betty Darnell
