a. Note:   Newspaper obituary: James L. Tanner, 78, retired soil specialist with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, died Monday, January 11, 1988 at Booth Memorial Hospital. He was a native and lifelong resident of Hebron, Ky. Mr. Tanner retired in 1966 after 35 years with the Ohio river division laboratories of the Army Engineers, where he tested soil for Corps projects. He also received the Sustained Superior Performance Award for research work in development of rigid pavements for military airfields and highways. A graduate of Hebron High School, Mr. Tanner was one of the founders of the Hebron Volunteer Fire Department, on which he served many years. He and his wife of 67 years, Lula (Easton) Tanner, were leaders of the local 4-H horse and pony project in the mid-1960s. "He was a wonderful person" she said. "He was interested in gardening and raised all kinds of vegetables and flowers." In addition to his wife, he is survived by his daughter, Sharon Scudder and sons, James and Eddie Tanner, all of Hebron; a brother Elmer Tanner of Lake Wales, Fla., and three grandchildren. Services will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Bullock Funeral Home, Hebron. Visitation, 4-8 p.m. today. Burial will be in Hebron Cemetery.
