Notes
a. Note:   According to Bill EASTOE's notes (which include info from Basil EASTOE), Barnard and his brother Edward ran away from home and joined the Buffs (East Kent regiment). They were under age and, with such an uncommon surname, their father soon traced them and brought them home. They apparently ran away again, changing their name to MASON, the name by which Edward was known for the rest of his life.
Barnard was in the Zulu wars and, as William Barnard EASTOE, married Mary Marie HOWE in 1875 in Ceylon. According to Gwen COLLISON (grandaughter of Barnard's brother Edward) shortly after the birth of their second child Barnard sent Mary back to England where he knew conditions would be better for her and the children. Daughter Mary died at sea during the voyage.
