Note: According to Bill EASTOE's notes (which include info from Basil EASTOE), Barnard and his brother Edward ran away from home and joined the Buffs (East Kent regiment). They were under age and, with such an uncommon surname, their father soon traced them and brought them home. They apparently ran away again, changing their name to MASON, the name by which Edward was known for the rest of his life. Edward transferred to the Indian army. (Can't find Edward in censuses either under EASTOE or MASON)
