Note: When John was two the family moved to Stephenville, OH where they remained until 1820, when they moved to Switzerland, IN settling near Vevay. In 1837 John married Miss Catherine Burns, a young Irish Girl. She bore him four children, two of whom, Kate (Mrs. Justin Harlan, of Kuttawa, KY) and Chester are still living. In the year 1846 Mr Littlefield founded the town of East Enterprise, IN, now a flourishing little village. In Sept 1852, his wife died, And the next month he, in company with Thomas Cole, Sr and wife (his sister) moved to Marshall, IL. On July 17th, 1853, he was married to Miss Amelia Martin, daughter of James Martin. She survives him. Mr Littlefield was part proprietor of the Eastern Illinoisan just before the war, but he sold his interest in that publication and during the war published "The Flag of Our Union", a red hot Union paper. About the close of the war he bought the Messenger, and has been interested in its publication ever since, either as able proprietor or as in late years, in partnership with his son Chester. Thus he died in the harness. Mr Littlefield was a member of the Methodist church from his early youth and he was ever a bitter and uncompromising foe to liquor in all its forms. It was his boast that never had a drop of any kind of liquor or an atom of tobacco in any form passed his lips. He was an ardent lover of out door sports and was one of the acknowledged champion croquet players of this section of country. He was also a rapid and tireless pedestrian. (Clark County Herald)
