He worked different jobs over the years and it was in this apartment that, Howard, Ginny, Rosalie and Fred were born. Around 1929 they rented a house that they then purchased. Janice and Alton were born in this house. John had an enormous garden. He grew corn, carrots, peas pole beans, beets, lettuce, radishes, cucumbers, potatoes, parsnips, cabbages, melons, rhubarb and horse. radish. Whcihever children were home, would help with schiching corn, cutting up beans, and shelling peas so Mom could can them. Dad also raised a few chickens, a cow, a yound bull, pigs, capons, hens and a rooster. One time we had some ducks and a bunch of rabbits. The rabbits were supposed to be raised for food but the kids made pets out of them and we could't eat them, so we had to turn them loose. John was and advid hunter and fisherman. Fishing was mostly for trout. Hunting was small game, rabbits, squirrels, partridge, and dieer. The family had a beagle named And which was a good rabbit hound. About 1937 John and son Howard would take off every Sunday in the fall and be gone most of the day. After Fred begged and beggedm, they let his go with them. the first few times he was not allowed to carry a gun, but the next year they let him carry a 22 rifle. Wilma would make home made bread which we would take with us hunting. For lunch we would shoot a squirrel to roast and have with our bread. There were usually wild apple trees so we were able to also have a few apples with lunch. If they were near a farmers field they may find a few potatoes to roast along with the squirrel. We never had to carry water as the streams in the hills were safe for drinking. In November John and son Fred would go deer hunting and later in the winter rabbit hunting. They would take their dog Andy to track the rabbits. In the Spring Dad and the boys that were home would go Perch fishing at Lake Morey. John built a flat-bottom wooden boat to use on Lake Morey. They also fished the local rivers and streams for trout. John worked construction for many years before working at the Bradford Veneer Mill. He worked at the mill until his death in 1956.
