  Accroding to the POLSTON ANCESTRY compiled and recorded by Ruth Polston Denkler from interview with Stephen Douglas Poston (son of Andrew Polston) prior to Stephen Douglas Poston's death in 1953, the "L" was used in the name "poston" after Andrew Polston was discharged from the Union Army, because on his first pension check he received a mistake had been made in the spelling, as they had included the "l." He never had it changed by the Pension Bureau, and from that date on, he signed the name as "POLSTON."
