This indenture, the thirteenth day of August in the year of our Lord one thousand eight hundred and thirty between Aaron Purcell and Moria his wife of the County of Vermillion and State of Indiana of the one part and John Ricketts of the county and state aforesaid of the other part witnesseth that the said Aaron Purcell and Moria his wife for and in consideration of the sume of four hundred and twenty five dollars to them in hand paid the receipt whereof is hereby acknowledged have granted bargained sold aliened released enfeoffed conveyed and conferred and by these presents do grant bargain sell alien release enfeoff convey and confirm unto the said John Ricketts his heirs and assigns the following tracts or parcels of land with all the priviliges and appurtenances lying and being in the count of Vermillion and state of Indiana to wit: the west half of the south east quarter of section no. eight in township No. nineteen of Range No. nine west containing eighty acres. Also the west half of the south west quarter of section no. four in township no nineteen north of range no nine west containing eighty acres. Also seventy nine acres off of the north end of the east half of the south west quarter of section no eight in township no nineteen north of range no nine west. The following identifies two bridges on Laughry Creek named for the Purcells. It could be the Stocktons and Purcells were neighbors and knew each other. PURCELL COVERED BRIDGE Pictures Info. Actually, there were 2 structures known as the Purcell Covered Bridge, neither of which is now standing. Both structures were built on the same site and crossed Laughery Creek in Section 1, Township 7 North, and Range 11 East, Ripley County. Though virtually no information is known about the specifics of the first Purcell Covered Bridge, in fact, it may not even have been covered. George Gould identified a World Guide number of 14-69-08 for it in his book "Indiana Covered Bridges Thru the Years," published in 1977 by the Indiana Covered Bridge Society, Inc. The second Purcell Covered Bridge was built in 1881 by Philip Ensminger. Utilizing a Howe Truss, the structure was 129 feet in long, or 135 feet including the 5-foot 6-inch overhang at each end, with a portal clearance 15 feet 6 inches wide by 13 feet high. The second Purcell Covered Bridge was listed as #14-69-05 in the World Guide (according to G. Gould's 1977 list) and was lost in 1957 ... In the February 1941 "Indiana History Bulletin" Robert B. Yule and Richard C. Smith assigned the designation "fe" to this Covered Timber Bridge located 1/2 miles northeast of Versailles.
