1880 Census-Ellen (20) is single and living with parents in Prescot WI, working as a music teacher. Carlos (55) is a druggist, Henry (30) is a physician, Clara (23) is a dressmaker, Alice (18) and Willie (14) are also in the home. Rebecca (55) is keeping house.
1887 - Aug 27 - St Paul Daily Globe - "Miss Ellen McCray has returned from a visit to her sister, Mrs. J. W. Howes at Grand Forks.
1888- 15 January - St. Paul Daily Globe - page 3-
“Miss Ellen McCray of Prescott, Wis., is the guest of Mrs. S. A. Wellington, at 215 Fourteenth street, during the carnival season.”
1900 Census - Carlos McCray (73) widowed is living in Prescott, Pierce Co., WI. No occupation is recorded for Carlos. In the home are Henry B (50), druggist, Ellen M (40), no occupation recorded, Lizzie Lace (30), born in Ireland, servant, and Alice (38), teacher in school.
1910 Census -This census record is a bit mixed up. It reports Carlos’ age as 60, Henry’ age as 84, and M. Ellen as 49. Carlos is a druggist in his own store. No occupation is reported for Henry or M. Ellen. At this time it would have been Henry, who was 60, running the drug store, and Carlos, who was 84 and retired.
1920 Census - Ellen (59), single, is living alone in Prescott, WI. She owns the home free of a mortgage, and has no occupation. This is perhaps the home of her parents.
1930 Census - “Ella McCray” (70) is living with her sister, Clara Howe (72) in Prescott, Pierce, WI. Clara is widowed, and owns the home, valued at $2000. The home is not a farm, so perhaps the ladies moved into town after Clara’s husband died in 1929. Ellen is reported to be employed as a housekeeper.
Was an accomplished musician and in her youth met a traveling violinist with whom she fell in love. This proved to be a disaster which left her grieving for the rest of her life.
She lived with her parents until Carlos died and then lived with Clara and Joe.

The following Find-a Grave memorial has the name “Effie McCray”. I believe this is Mary Ellen McCray, and either “Effie” was a nick name, or the record was misread. The plot is 22 F, the same plot as Carlos McCray, her father.
