Note: N144 The parentage of our Harriet Morrison is very uncertain. For a time I felt William Morrison was her father. Now (2015) I am feeling more certain that William’s brother, Samuel Morrison and Jane Cowan were her parents. Their sons, William C and James Thompson Morrison both named daughters “Harriet”. Samuel Morrison and his family were living in Pickaway county, Ohio when Harriet married William Johnson there. Harriet named one of her sons “William C”, another “Thompson”. James Thompson Morrison, Sarah Morrison, and Charles H Morrison were wittnesses to Harriet’s application for suvivors pension, and Harriet’s address on the application was that of the home of Charles, in Burlington, Des Moins, Iowa. Another possible scenario for the parentage of Harriet is as follows: A family tree for the Walker clan shows William Morrison married first to a woman named Rebecca, last name unknown. This tree shows two sons from this union, born in the time frame of 1808 to 1810, but no daughter. Census records show Martin Wilson living next door to William Morrison in Pine Creek, PA. Martin Wilson was the father of William Wilson, the Wisconson lumber baron of the mid 1800’s. The biography of William Wilson mentions that he had a sister named Rebecca about whom nothing was known. I am posing the possibility that Rebecca Wilson was married to William Morrison, and Harriet was their daughter. Rebecca perhaps died around the time of Harriet’s birth. Harriet, a newborn babe, might have been given to Samuel Morrison and Jane Cowan to raise, as they married in 1808. This might explain why Harriet named her daughter “Rebecca Wilson”. This is just speculation. ___________________________ note: death date estimated from divorce records of Rebecca and John C Rose. Harriet gave a statement in the divorce proceedings Apr 11 1882 and a civil war pension application found by John Merriell dated 1889. John Merriell felt strongly that Harriet died in Burlington, Iowa, although he was not able to find a death record. Note: The genealogy of the Morrisons discussed below is speculative. The notes suggest connections to several Morrison families, but nothing definitive has been found. Research done by John Merriell suggests our Morrisons were from the Northumberland County/Lycoming County/Pine Creek/Williamsport area of Pennsylvania. But histories, and other genealogy work on these Morrisons do not mention a Harriet E Morrison. ________________________ JOHNSON GENEALOGY _____________ Morrison (1775-c1845); b. The others are probably Morrisons. An application for Mother’s Pension in 1879 in Burlington, Iowa, show a Charles H Morrison, J T Morrison, and Sarah Morrison as witnesses. These are perhaps siblings or cousins of Harriet. ________ U. S. Civil War Pension Index 1861-1934 Soldier: William Johnson name of Dependent: Widow: Johnson, Harriet M(?) Service: 26 194 Ohio Inf Date of Filing: 1879 Ap 28; Class Invalid; Application no: 282,487; Certificate no. 250,585 (not sure this is our Harriet Johnson) ____________________ 1850 Census Samuel Morrison (66), Jane(66), Thompson (28), Charles (27), Sarah (26), Ellen (25), Mary (1), Isabel (0) are living in Wayne, Tippecanoe, Indiana. Samuel, Jane, Tompson, Charles, and Sarah were born in PA. Ellen was born in VA. Mary was born in Indiana, Isabel in Ohio. These people could be relatives of Harriet. Pickaway County Ohio Marriage records shows Thompson Morrison married Ellen Kidwell 28 Oct 1847. The Ellen in the 1850 census record may have been Thompson’s wife and Mary and Isabel their children. Also listed in the Pickaway marriage records is William Morrison who married Elizbath Vankirk 11 Aug 1840. William may have been another son of the above Samuel and Jane Morrison. Online records show a William Cowan Morrison, whom I am assuming to be a son of Samuel Morrison and Mary Jane Cowan. 1856 - Iowa State census - Burlington - Wm Johnson (43) born in Kentucky, Carpenter, Harriet Johnson (47) born in Pennsylvania, Samuel A Johnson (13) born in Ohio, Rebecca W (11) born in Ohio, William C (7) born in Ohio. The record shows this family has been in Iowa 2 years. The following others are listed in the home as well: T Parrot (23) b. Ohio - in Iowa 5 years Hannah Roberts (23) b. Maine - in Iowa 1 year Nathaniel Roberts (27) b. Maine - in Iowa 1 year Harris Palmer (15) b. Indiana - in Iowa 1 year James Palmer (12) b. Indiana - in Iowa 1 year The census record does not report what the relationship is between these additional people and the Johnsons. None of these other people are married according to the record. William Johnson, T Parrot, and Nathaniel Roberts are in the militia. 1856 - Indentured Children- Des Moines County, Iowa1844-1883 LDS Family History Library Microfilm (Indentured Children of Des Moines County Sources: 1) Indentured children 1844-1883 A-W - Film #1613065 Item 2 2) Indentured children, series 2 1852-1886, Heitmeier, Charles - Young, John - Film #1683718 Item 2 The number in the source column tells you which film it was on. Documents on the film usually included the agreement documents between the parties involved. This is a list of indentured children for Des Moines County, Iowa. Indentured basically means they were hired out or apprenticed in some way. To the left is an example of the agreement the Children's Aid Society used. This was one way a young adult could get placed in Iowa, whether they were an orphan or not. If you have any further information on these children, please let us know about it.) CHILD: Marinda Bane Parent: Bridget Bane Guardian: William Johnson 17 Nov 1856 FIlm no 1 (Note: the Federal Census for 1910 lists a Marinda Bane from Chillecothe, Ross, Ohio. Perhaps a relative) 1860 Census - Harriet (51), Samuel A (17), Rebecca W (15), William C (11) and an adopted daughter Merinda J (6) J Johnson(6) are in Burlington, Iowa. No occupation is recorded for Harriett, but Samuel is reported as a teamster. William C Johnson’s place of birth is given as Iowa, Merinda’s Illinois. The age and place of birth for William suggests the family moved to Iowa before 1849. However, the 1856 census gives Ohio as the place of birth for William, and reports the family was in Iowa 2 years as of 1856. ________ 1860 - Charles Morrison (40), wife Elizabeth (3?), son Virgil D (10) and daughter Belle D (4) are also in Burlington, IA. Charles is a teamster. Samuel Morrison(45), Tabitha (45), Joseph Feller (17), Sarah (8) and Sarah (37), Fountain (10) are living in Benton Twp, Des Moines Co., IA. Samuel and Sarah (37) were born in PA, Sarah(8) and Fountain were born in Indiana. (relatives perhaps) 1870 Census - John C (36) Rose, R. W (23), Nellie (10), Willard (8), Anna (3), Adelle (1), are in Eau Claire, WI. John is a Lumberman. H. E. Johnson (61) “helps in the house”. They were running a boarding house and the help and boarders are listed as well. 1875 Wisconsin State Census - John C Rose in Eau Claire, WI, 2 white males, 5 white females. The 2 males were likely John Carmichael Rose, and his son from his first marriage, Willard. The females were Rebecca (Johnson) Rose, Ellen (Nellie), his daughter from the first marriage, Anna (b. 1867), Adele (b. 1869), and Katie May (b. 1871). So it seems Rebecca's mother, Harriet Johnson, was not in the home as of 1875. I think Harriet probably died between 1870 and 1880 in Eau Claire. It seems unlikely she would have not been living with Rebecca in 1880 if she were still alive. _______________ _______________________ The following records are an attempt to learn who Harriet Morrison Johnson was and who were the people in the photograph. I have no firm evidence that the people in the census records below are relatives of Harriet, but the names and dates suggest it is possible. 1850 Census - Samuel Morrison (66), Jane Morrison (66), Thompson Morrison (28), Charles Morrison (27), Sarah Morrison (26), Ellen Morrison (25), Mary Morrison (1), Isabel Morrison (0) are living in Wayne, Tippecanoe, Indiana. Samuel, Jane, Thompson, Charles, and Sarah were born in PA. Ellen was born in VA, Mary in IN, and Isobel maybe OH, but the writing in the original record isn’t clear. Is this Harriet’s original family? Is Jane really Sarah Jane? The ages of Samuel and Jane work as parents of Harriet. Charles, Thompson (J. T perhaps) and Sarah, are the three names who were witnesses on Harriet’s application for mother’s pension. Harriet named one of her son’s Samuel, and one Tompson. Lots of coincidences An Ancestry.com tree has Samuel Morrison, b. 28 Oct 1782 in Lycoming, PA, to William Morrison (1745-1811) and Sarah Walker (1755-1798) m. Mary Jane Cowan 18 Aug 1807 in Shippensburg, Cumberland, PA r. Mifflin, Lycoming, PA 1810 d. Keok, Lee, Iowa 15 Nov 1847 If this is accurate it would make Samuel the brother of William Morrison, whose first wife was Rebecca ?, and whose second wife was Isabella Wilson. However, this particular tree has lots of errors. 1860 Census- Charles Morrison (40). Elizabeth (30), Virgil D (10), Belle D (4) are living in Burlington, Des Moines, Iowa. Charles, born in PA, was a Teamster. Elizabeth, Virgil, and Belle were born in Ohio. 1870 Census - Charles Morrison (48), born in PA, is living with his family in Des Moines, Burlington Co., IA. His wife, Elizabeth (40) is from Ohio; son Virgil (20) is a cooper, Bella (14) and Elmer (9) are “at school” and Elizabeth (5) at home. Charles is a carpenter. Virgil and Bella were born in Ohio. Elizabeth in Iowa. Charles may be the brother of Harriet. 1880 Census - Sarah Morrison (58), son Fountain (28) and brother James Thompson (60) are living in Des Moines,Burlington Co., Iowa. Fountain is an Engineer and James Thompson a Laborer. This may be the J.T. Morrison who witnessed the application for mother’s pension. Charles Morrison (60), wife Elizabeth (45), Virgil D stepson (26), Elmer (18) , Lizzie J (11), and William (6) are also in Burlington, IA. Charles is a carpenter, Virgil a boilermaker, Elmer is “learning to make boilers” Charles and his parents were born in PA, Elizabeth in OH. 1885 Census (Iowa State census) Thompson Morrison(66) b. PA; Fountan (30) b. IN; Elizabeth(22); Sarah (60) b. PA; are in Burlington WD4, Des Moines, IA. Also in the home are William(33) and Sarah Cress(32) and Fred Herman. Sarah Cress was born in PA and may be Thompson’s daughter. 1895 Census (Iowa State Census) shows Charles H Morrison (75) living in the 6th Ward of Des Moines 1895 Census (Iowa State Census) Thompson Morrison (77) b. PA living in Second Burlington, Iowa. 1900 Census - Charles H Morrison (81) born March 1819 in PA, Elizabeth (70) his wife was born June 1829 in Ohio, and William Morrison (27), their son, was born Aug 1872 in Iowa. William is a machinist, and is single. “N. G. “ was entered for the occupation for Charles H. Morrison. In Des Moines, Burlington, Iowa. Charles and Elizabeth were married in 1861. Elizabeth was the mother of 6 children, 4 of whom are living at the time of this census. _________________________________________________________________________________ Harriet Morrison and William Johnson were married in Pickaway Co, Ohio. It is possible that the Morrisons mentioned below are relatives of Harriet Morrison, perhaps her brothers. 58th Regiment, Ohio Vol. Inf. The 58th Ohio was organized in the fall of 1861, in response to President Lincoln's call for 300,000 men. It remained at Camp Chase until February to, 1862, when it was ordered to Fort Donelson, Tennessee, where it was assigned to Thayer's brigade of Lew Wallace's division. It performed valiant duty at the battle of Fort Donelson and increased its reputation at the battle of Pittsburg Landing. The regiment was next sent to Corinth, then to Memphis, after which it was ordered to Helena, Arkansas, where it remained from July 27th to October 5th, in the meantime taking part in a number of reconnaissances, which were made down the Mississippi on transports. The regiment was next sent up the Yazoo River, where engagements with the enemy were had at Haines' Bluff, Greenville and Bolivar Landing. On October 6th the 58th Ohio was sent into Missouri, then to Camp Steele, Mississippi, where after a month of inaction it embarked, December 22nd, on steamers for Johnston's Landing, on the Yazoo. The enemy was found in force and some hard fighting resulted on December 27th and 28th, especially the latter date, when the 58th Ohio lost 47 per cent. of the whole number engaged. Capt. Samuel M.. Morrison and Lieut. Stephen Defenbaugh, of Company I, were wounded in this engagement. The regiment remained in the vicinity until January 2, 1863, when it proceeded to Arkansas Post, assisting in its capture. It then went into camp at Young's Point, Louisiana. On February 8, 1863, it was ordered to serve on board the iron-clads of the Mississippi flotilla, and was distributed by companies to the different steamers. On the night of April 16th, the iron-clads and transports ran the gauntlet of the Vicksburg batteries, the 58th Ohio losing but one man. On the 29th of April the 58th lost heavily in the battle of Grand Gulf. After taking part in a number of expeditions, the regiment joined the land forces at Vicksburg and was assigned to the First Brigade, First Division, 17th Army Corps. It performed provost duty at Vicksburg until December 24, 1864, and was then ordered to Columbus, where it was mustered out on January 14, 1865. Valentine Bausenwein was colonel of the regiment. Company I was formed in Pickaway County and was mustered into the service on October 30, 1861. The membership of the company was as follows : Captain, Samuel M. Morrison; 1st lieutenant, William Roby; 2nd lieutenant, .Stephen Defenbaugh ; sergeants--J. T. Morrison, Joseph Davisson, Stephen Miller, H. N. Myers and Emanuel Royse; corporals--C. W. She was born January 3, 1854, at Lafayette, Tippecanoe County, Ind. She was educated in the schools of Lafayette. Early in life she became a member of the First Baptist church in her native city. She was married October 18, 1876, to Othniel Lucre Lupton. Her husband was the eldest son of James Johnson and Martha Lane Lupton, and was born in Lafayette, June 10, 1849. He was a photographer by profession. Soon after their marriage they moved to Greenville, Bond County, Ill., where they remained four years. They then moved to Paducah, Ky., but remained there but a short time. They were for brief periods located in Champaign, Champaign County, Ill.; Lafayette, Ind.; Independence, Buchanan County, Iowa. In September, 1882, they located in Burlington, Des Moines County, Iowa, where they have since resided with the exception of two years -- 1896-7 -- spent at New London, Henry County, Iowa. Mr. Lupton died January 19, 1912. This suggest the photo was taken after 1881. __________________ Another possible lead: 91. The following family tree fragment is the best approximation to the ancestry of Harriet E Morrison. My interpretation is that Harriet was born to William Morrison and his first wife Rebecca, perhaps between son John and William. After Rebecca died, and William married Isabella Wilson, Harriet was raised by Isabella, the only mother she knew. When Harriet’s daughter was born she named her Rebecca after her biological mother, and Wilson after the woman who raised her. 105.
