“It appears that I guessed correctly. Apparently all were initially classified as I-A unless they had dependents (III-A). All the I-As had to report for physical exam where the herd was culled and those being rejected were reclassified as IV-F, Rejected for Military Service. Daddy was reclassified as II-B(H), Deferred in War Production (aged 38-44) on 9-9-42, and again on 3-19-43 as IV-A, Deferred by Reason of Age. It also appears (COLUMN 13) that he was initially reclassified from I-A to II-A, Deferred in Support of National Health, Safety, or Interest, and that was subsequently changed to II-B(H) as above. That may have been simply an administrative correction. Overall it looks as if he had no real exposure. He got his notice to appear, he showed up and told them he worked at B&W and that got him off the hook initially. Six months later he turned 45 and that was it. “ (Bill Eberle, son)
So it seems that an occupational deferrment was in effect until age kicked in. Fritz’s service with the German army in WWI and his having had tuberculosis does not seem to have been addressed since his employment with Babcock and Wilcox precluded consideration of other issues.

F. EBERLE is chief metallurgical engineer at the research center of Babcock & Wilcox Co. Formerly he was associated with the metallurgical staffs of Cadillac Motor Co., Leeds & Northrup Co. and Carnegie Illinois Steel Corp. He has a PhD in chemical and metallurgical engineering from the Technical Universify of Munich.
R. D. WYLIE, assistant manager of quality control, The Babcock & Wilcox Company. He has a BS in metallurgical engineering, University of Michigan, 1944. After World War duty with the navy and graduation from college he was employed at General Electric Company until 1948 when he joined his present employer as a metallurgist.

Abstract Severe metal–wastage was experienced on AISI Type 347 (18Cr-8Ni-Nb) and AISI Type 310 (25Cr-20Ni) used in the construction of a gas generator in which methane was burned with oxygen to produce carbon monoxide and hydrogen for fuel synthesis of the Fischer-Tropsch type. The mode of attack varied with temperature. At the highest temperatures, above 1650 to 1800 F, it consisted of straight oxidation, progressing intergranularly. With decreasing temperatures, heavy carburization with occasional signs of interspersed oxidation manifested itself. As temperatures declined further, cycling carburization, oxidation and reduction were observed, accompanied by severe metal wastage. Typically attacked metal surfaces consisted of a semi-scale containing tiny globules of metallic particles surrounded by carbon or graphite interspersed with oxide. Tests with specimens of numerous steels and alloys installed at various locations in the reactor showed that the most resistant materials were those which best resisted carburization, that is, nickel, Monelj, Inconel, AISI Type 446 (27 chrome-iron), copper, and pack-calorized materials. 4.2.3 Received: January 29, 1959;

Survived TB after WWI, thyroid cancer in early 1950’s, bladder cancer in 1970’s. Suffered several grand mal seizures the last few years of life, after being hit by a car and knocked unconcious while walking in the countryside in Breunsberg, Germany, with his brother Willy.
Worked until age 75.
Was a vegetarian from 1956 until his death, after sitting up all night with the family’s dying pet cat.
